This is a two-variable problem. And, for two-variables we know we need two equations. Let's let p represent the cost per pound of peanuts and let's let c represent the cost per pound of cashews.
From the given information we derive:
Rosa: 1c + 2p = $10.00
and
Sara: 2c + 1p = $11.00
I like using the substitution rule rather than the elimination rule. If we solve the first equation for c we get:
c = $10.00 - 2p/1 or just $10.00 - 2p
We then plug this information into the second equation, which ultimately alleviates one of our variables.
We get:
2($10.00 - 2p) + 1p = $11.00
$20.00 - 4p + 1p = $11.00
$20.00 -3p = $11.00
$20.00 - $11.00 = 3p
$9.00 = 3p
$3.00/lbs = p
thus,
c = $4.00/lbs
