The dialectic differences within the ASL numbers don't vary too much. It's standard to teach them as you've seen them in that link, but in my own experience, I've always signed with my palm facing away from me and to the other person. I very much agree with "Bill's first rule: If it hurts, don't do it." Do what's most comfortable to you within the general guidelines. If you're concerned about numbers like two and three (and doing three with your three middle fingers instead with your thumb), try to keep in mind that sign language, like all languages, involve context. Generally, another person would realize whether you mean "V" or two, or "W or three. You don't need to be a perfectionist. What matters is that you can get your meaning across properly.
