A smooth transition from those two similar signs (and double letters and anything else this would apply to) is to move your hand in a different position from where it started. For example, with "Jim," you would sign the 'J,' and as you finish the sign, move your hand slightly to the right and sign the 'i.' It might also help if you pushed the 'i' slightly towards the person (but not excessively, as this could be seen as aggressive) to further emphasize that you're using a new letter.
