Does a deaf person have to come up with a name sign for you or is that a myth? If it’s a real tradition how do I establish one without knowing any deaf people?

Yes, a Deaf person must give you a sign name. Really, you can't establish one without knowing a Deaf person. It's a good reason to go out in the Deaf community to make some friends, use the language, and learn more about the culture!
