You subtract the second equation from the first and see what happens
5x+y=15
3x+y=11
2x + 0 = 4 Now you know what x is and y is
Note: when subtracting on from the other doesn't work try multiplying on of the equations by some constant then adding or subtracting which will eliminates one variable for you.
If that doesn't work try multiplying on equation by on constant ad the other by another. If you multiply the first equation by 3 and the second equation by -5 and add the two equation you will end up with -5y= 45 -55
