Find the perimeter and area of the polygon

Find the perimeter and area of the polygon shown below.

The polygon is a trapezoid made up of a rectangle and a right triangle. The rectangle is 18 feet long and 15 feet wide. The right triangle joins the rectangle at a side that is 15 feet wide, and this is the height of the triangle. The base of the triangle is 8 feet and the hypotenuse is 17 feet.

The area of the shape is the area of the rectangle plus the area of the triangle

 

area of the rectangle = 15 x 18

 

area of the triangle = 1/2 x 15 x 8

 

Calculate these two numbers and add them together for the total area

 

The perimeter is the top of the rectangle (18) + the side of the rectangle (15) + bottom of rectangle (18) +

   

       base of triangle (8) + hypotenuse (17)

 

Just add these together for the total perimeter
