Hi.  Sometimes, you should use common sense when answering a question like this.  Just think:

The price now is 110% of the original price. 

 

1.  Change the percent to a decimal expression so that you may multiply it times the current price.

2.  110%  divided by 100 will put the decimal point in the correct place.  To divide by 100 move the decimal point to the left two spaces.  So 110% = 1.10  expressed as a decimal.  (Think about it.  1= 100%  and .10 = 10%, so 1 plus 10% = 110 %. 

3.  Now multiply 2.85 x 1.10. 

 

THE ANSWER IS:  $3.14, which was the original price before the 10% reduction.

 

Check your work by computing 10% of $3.14.  Add that to $2.85 (reduced price) to see if it equals the old price ($3.14).
