The Nguyen family's sprinkler was used for 25
hours. The Lewis family's sprinkler was used for 20
hours. There was a combined total output of 1425 L
of water. What was the water output rate for each sprinkler if the sum of the two rates was
65L per hour?

Let x = output rate of Nguyen sprinkler

Let y = output rate of Lewis sprinkler

 

25x + 20y = 1425

x + y = 65

 

Solve for x in terms of y in 2nd equation:  x = 65-y

Substitute into 1st equation and solve for y

 

25(65-y) + 20y = 1425

1625 - 25y + 20y = 1425

-5y = -200

y = 40 Lph for Lewis family sprinkler

 

x = 65-y = 25 Lph for Nguyen family sprinkler
