The difference of the numbers is 39:  x - y = 39

 

Your equations are:

 

x + y = 5

x - y = 39     add the two equations

x = 22

 

Plug 22 in for x in one of the original equations and solve for y

 

22 + y = 5

y = 5 - 22

y = -17
