     Make l the subject means solve for l.

kl - km = lm - ln           remove the parenthesis using the distributive property.

kl - lm + ln = km          bring all the terms with an l on one side and put all terms without an l on the other side.

l(k - m + n)= km         factor out the l from each term.

l = km/(k-m+n)           divide both sides by whatever l is being multiplied by.

 

And you're done. By the way, you will get a different version of the answer if you bring the l to the right hand side but it is also correct.

To isolate the variable l from all other variables, you need all the terms with l on the same side of the equation, then factor out l, then divide by everything other than l

 

The first step is to multiply out or use the distributive law where appropriate.

 

k(l - m) = l(m - n)     distribute left side only

 

kl - km = l(m - n)       collect terms with l on the left side

 

kl + l(n - m) = km       factor out l

 

l(k + n - m) = km       divide by factor (k + m - n)

  

l = km / (k + n - m)
