To add or subtract fractions you need a common
denominator ... The number on the bottom. We
need the Least Common Denominator (LCD)... the smallest
number that both denominators divide into equally.
our denominators are 4 and 8.
The LCD is 8
So we need to change 1/4 into a fraction
with 8 on the bottom.
(1/4)(2/2) = 2/8
Note that 2/2 = 1 so the actual value
is the same since we multiplied by 1
5/8 - 1/4 = 5/8 - 2/8 = (5-2)/8 = 3/8

If you need to add or subtract fractions you need to find common denominators. That is...? I'm having a lot of trouble understanding, too.11/17/21
