An elevator is decending with uniform acceleration . To measure the acceleration , a person in the elevator drops a coins at he moments the elevator starts. The coin 6 ft above the floor of the elevator at the time it is dropped . The person find that the coin take 1 second to strike the floor . From these data what is acceleration of the elevator ?

They are both right. It depends on what sign you adding to the acceleration due to gravity. I chose the acceleration due to gravity to be negative, while the other tutor chose it to be positive. in my opinion, I prefer to denote acceleration due to gravity to be negative, as gravity pushes objects downward.

Sorry, that should read "It depends on what sign you assign to the acceleration due to gravity", not "It depends on what sign you adding to the acceleration due to gravity". Sorry about that
