emory bought 10 new vintage dresses she lost 3/4 of them in a fire she has 8 left how many did she have altogether

trying to figure out answer but i am stuck thanks for any help anyone can give me

X is the number of dresses she originally had

She bought 10 more, so X+10

 

if 3/4 of them were destroyed in the fire, the she has 1/4 of them left.

 

1/4(X + 10) = 8

 

x+10 = 8 * 4 = 32 <--- multiplies both sides by 4 to clear away the fraction

 

X = 32 - 10 = 22 <--- subtracts 10 form both sides
