the other is  3 more than twice the number  = 3 + 2*x = 3 +2x

 

their sum is 57

 

x + (3 +2x) = 57

 

x + 2x + 3 = 57  [collecting the like terms]

 

3x + 3 =57

 

3x = 57 - 3 [ substract 3 from both sides]

 

 

3x =54

 

3x/3 =54/3 [ divide  both sides by 3]

 

x = 18

 

The first number is  18

 

the other number is 3 + 2x  [ and x = 18]

 

so we have 3 + 2 (18) = 3 +36 = 39

 

The first number is 18 and the other number is 39

 

add them together to get 57
