As Mark M. pointed out, you did not provide the length of the line. But suppose the length of the line is x steps. Then the fraction of the line behind Eddie is 5/x. The fraction of the line ahead of Eddie is (x - 5)/x. Note that the two fractions add up to 1.

It started at 'Eddie walked 8 equal steps to get from one line to the other. Eddie has taken 5 steps....

Hooray !!
Now, both Mark and Arturo are very excellent tutors; I've read hundreds of their Answers on this forum. However, they differ in style (which I'm learning to replicate in computer software, but it is tough).
Recently, I mentioned that a guess with an answer is often correct and saves an interaction. When tutoring in person, it is relatively quick to ask for clarification in a terse manner. However, we must realize that the Answers Forum and computers introduce extra communication difficulties (insufficient space is a great example) so additional patience and a slightly different strategy is appropriate.
It is great to see that this process works.
