the diagonal of a rectangular room is 26 ft long. One wall measures 14 ft longer than the adjacent wall. find the dimensions of the room. 

The width of the room is?

w² + (w + 14)² = 26²

w² + w² + 28w + 196 = 676

2w² + 28w - 480 = 0

w² + 14w - 240 = 0

(w + 24)(w - 10) = 0

 

w + 24 = 0

w = -24

This answer is out because we don't measure with negative numbers.

 

w - 10 = 0

w = 10
