Maria,
The first thing you want to do is isolate your variable by subtracting 3x from each side of the equation. This will leave you with -2x = -6. After that divide each side of the equation by the coefficient ( in this case -2 ).
When you divide -6 by -2 you get your answer.
I hope this is helpful.

Maria,
When you divide ( or multiply ) two negative numbers your answer is positive. Therefore -6--2 = 3. As far as the angles are concerned, I would need some more information. Is there a way you could draw or scan the problem? There must be some additional visual information. Let me know

Thanks John, this helps. I'll try and describe it better. It is a 90 degree angle with a line that splits the angle. One angle (Angle A) equals X and the other angle (Angle B) equals (3X-6). Then the question was find what Angle B is? Thanks so far for all your help. The drawing isn't readily accessible at this moment.

Maria,
If the two angles add up to 90. Then you have an equation that would read :
x + 3x-6 = 90
Then you would combine your like terms
4x - 6 =90
isolate you variable by adding 6 to each side
this would leave you with
4x = 96 Once you solve for x you will know what each angle equals.
What led you to believe that they were congruent? Just because they appear that way to the eye doesn't mean that that are.
Let me know if this is clear to you
