What is the distance from campsite A to campsite B?

Campsite A and campsite B are located directly opposite of each other on the shores of a lake. The two campsites form a right triangle with Sam's position. The distance from campsite B to Sam's position is 1300 yards and campsite A is 1700 yards from his position

a²+b²=c²

let a=the distance from A to B which is the unknown

let b=the distance from B to Sam which is 1300

let c=the distance from A to Sam which is 1700

(1700)²=(1300)²+a²

2,890,000=1,690,000+a²

2,890,000-1,690,000=a²

1,200,000=a²

take the square root of both sides

a=1095.445 yards is the distance from A to B

This is a Pythagorean Theorem problem.

 

We'll call the triangle ABS.  The right angle is at B on my diagram (though it could also be A and give the same answer).  Side SB is given as 1300, side AS (the hypotenuse) is given as 1700.

 

That means that:

 

1300^{2 ₊} AB² = 1700²

 

AB² = 1700²-1300²  (subtracting 1300² from both sides)

 

AB² = 1,200,000  (simplifying)

 

AB = 1095.4 yards (square rooting both sides and rounding)
