First of all, you must find out how much the pencils cost her in all. She started off with $24 and ended up with $10, so to find out how much she spent, subtract $10 from $24.
$24 - $10 = $14
Now that we know the pencils cost $14 all together, we can find out how much one of the pencils cost. Since there were 7 pencils, we need to divide 14 by 7.
$14 ÷ 7 = $2
So each pencil cost $2.
