When it comes to selecting a tutor in the performing arts, experience is everything and mine is substantial. Since I first brought down the house with a solo rendition of Stevie Wonder’s 'I Just Called to Say I Love You' over twenty years ago, I've been performing on stage and providing peer tutoring to fellow band and choir members in both voice and instrumental music. While still in school, I served part-time as a volunteer accompanist, music instructor, and assistant director for the music programs at St. Matthew Catholic School and Catholic High School (now Bishop Sullivan Catholic) in Virginia Beach. Currently I serve as an accompanist for the music ministry at St. Mark Catholic Church and perform routinely with their three choirs.
I specialize in flute for beginning students, with the understanding that learning to play an instrument requires regular practice and active participation in every lesson no matter how insignificant it may seem. Lessons vary based on the skill level of the student, and the amount of music background which they have coming into the program.
To ensure that students have a quiet space, I have a dedicated music and arts room on the back of my home. However, I may travel to a location of your choice within a 10 mile radius if that is more convenient for the student.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies! When it comes to selecting a tutor in the performing arts, experience is everything and mine is substantial. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have studied flute for eighteen years, and have performance experience as a soloist, as an accompanist, and in working with ensembles and full bands. My background includes seven years of both private and group instruction under several former members of the Tidewater Winds, during which I also tutored my peers in music as part of the learning experience. Additionally, I have competed at both the local and state levels and received two nominations to the Virginia Governor's School for the Performing Arts in the category of instrumental music as well as the Virginia Music Educators' Award for outstanding performance.
I am familiar with basic music theory and can sight-read music in both the treble and bass clefts. Beyond that, I have done some work in the fields of composition and improvisational music.
I prefer working with beginning and intermediate level students, but my major requirement is that the student come to each tutoring session prepared and willing to learn: to devote their time and full attention to each lesson.
