About Laura

Teaching and learning are passions for me, and tutoring gives me an opportunity to share those passions with students and their families. I take time to get to know each student and how or she learns best so that tutoring sessions are useful and specialized. Many students need support outside of the traditional classroom environment, and I can provide content knowledge, motivation, organizational strategies, and specific teaching methods to help students achieve classroom success. As a tutor, I am here to help students find the answers, understand the concepts, or develop the ideas so that they can be used and applied now and in the future.

I am offering tutoring in English, grammar, literature, and writing. I'm also available for assistance with the SAT and ACT reading and writing sections. For the upcoming semester, I have a flexible schedule, and I am happy to travel to a neutral location for our sessions.

I have a B.A. in English from the College of William and Mary, and an M.Ed. from the University of Virginia. I taught high school literature, wriitng, and grammar for eleven years in the public school system. I currently work as an online college writing tutor for a private company.

Thank you for considering me, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have 11 years of high school teaching experience, which included teaching reading and writing. Now, I work with college students on some of these same concepts: main idea, context, vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, etc. My B.A. from William and Mary also focused on these topics, and since I use them at work every day, they stay fresh in my mind. Finally, I do have experience working with students to improve their scores in the ACT!

Literature

I have a B.A. in English from the College of William and Mary and an M.Ed. from UVA in Curriculum and Instruction. I taught high school English for eleven years. During that time, I taught all levels of literature and all genres, from Shakespeare to American literature to world literature. When I work with students on understanding and analyzing literature, I try to ask a lot of questions and help them develop a personal interpretation of the text rather than giving my opinion as fact. Literature is a passion, and I hope to share that passion.

Praxis

I graduated from the College of William and Mary with a B.A. in English, and I earned an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from UVA. I had a teaching license in the state of Virginia in English 6-12 from 1999-2013. My Praxis I Scores were as follows: Reading 184/190, Writing 184/190, and Mathematics 187/190.

Proofreading

I have a B.A. in English from the College of William and Mary, and I taught high school English for eleven years.
For over a year now, I have worked as a college writing tutor where I have helped students revise, edit, and proofread essays. These students have come from all levels of higher education, from freshman composition to doctoral candidates. I believe that proofreading should include not only help identifying errors, but explanations to prevent the error from occurring in future papers and drafts.

SOL

After teaching English in each of the high school grades, I am familiar with the Standards of Learning for 11th grade reading and writing. For years, I worked with the teachers at my school to run an after school workshop just to prepare for the tests. We taught strategies as well as content. This past summer, I tutored a young man for the SOL Writing Test. He had failed it three times as a special education student. After we worked on test-taking strategies, how to formulate an essay, and vocabulary, he passed with a 423.

Vocabulary

I taught eleven years of high school English in Virginia, where a large classroom focus was the vocabulary state standard. I choose to tutor vocabulary in two ways: by having a student read and develop understanding through context clues and by teaching root words. The second strategy is often the most effective, I create online quizzes and flash cards so students have online options for learning and review.
