Looking for extra help with college / high school math or physics, or college computer science? Perhaps an AP Calculus or Physics exam is coming up, or your student would like to improve their SAT scores? I have helped hundreds of students...check out my reviews and ratings. It's great to hear my students passed that hard mandatory class or got an A on a big test, a 5 on an AP exam, or a 1440 on their SAT. I have a Master's in Computer Science from Stanford, and enjoy helping people learn about math and computer science, as well as related subjects like physics, discrete math and SAT prep.

My specialties include college / AP classes like calculus and physics, as well as college classes for discrete math, computer architecture, and algorithm analysis. If you are dealing with a challenging class, a tough teacher, or just need a refresher in trigonometry, probability and statistics, or precalc, I would love to help you. My students appreciate my approach with lots of patience and positive reinforcement.

I have a flexible schedule, and can meet you or your student online or in person after school or during the day. Most of my in-person students meet at the library or in their home. During the school year, I have a number of regular weekly clients who get priority for future appointments, so not all times shown in the availability list below are available for new clients, but I would be happy to work with you to find a time that would work for you.

My preference is to work with students who want to improve performance over a series of regular sessions, as opposed to one-time help for a class assignment or test. You might reasonably expect a one-letter grade improvement from weekly meetings over an eight week period; of course, that varies with the student, subject, and situation, so is a goal rather than a guarantee.

Subjects

Computer

Computer Engineering,

Computer Engineering

On Wyzant's platform, I often tutor courses in boolean algebra / digital logic as well as computer organization and assembly language. I am competent to consult on architecture and engineering topic including security and performance engineering. I have thirty year's work experience as a professional software engineer, developing and manage software engineering efforts using a variety of languages and operating systems. My specialty is systems software, especially operating systems, networks and databases. I have an MSCS from Stanford in Computer Science, as well as a BS is Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan.
Computer Science

Computer Science

I enjoy teaching computer science material, especially including some of the more theoretical subjects like data structures and analysis of algorithms, as opposed to primarily teaching programming language constructs. I have a Master's degree in computer science from Stanford, and thirty years professional experience in computer engineering. I work as a systems architect and help mentor junior developers. I was a teaching assistant at the University of Michigan as an undergraduate.

Calculus,

Calculus

I am among the top in-person calculus tutors in the state of Virginia, while also doing extensive online tutoring for several years on Wyzant and other platforms. (Not to mention that I am a Jeopardy winner, too!) I have helped dozens of students in person and many more online with calculus problems, including differential and integral calculus of a single variable (i.e. College Calc I/II, as well as high school AP AB/BC), including limits, differentiation and integration techniques, word problems, and series. Please let me know if I can be of some help, and we can discuss how to set up a session at your preferred time. Final exams and AP tests will be here before you know it!
Physics,

Physics

I am among the top in-person physics tutors in the state of Virginia, while also doing online tutoring for several years on Wyzant and other platforms. (Not to mention that I am a Jeopardy winner, too!) I work with a lot of students in first-year college programs, as well as AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C programs. I have helped dozens of students in-person and many more online with physics problems, especially involving dynamics (laws of motion, energy conservation, rotational dynamics, momentum, etc) but also waves, electricity and magnetism, and basic optics, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. If I can be of some help, please write to me and we can set up a time to discuss your problems.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

As you can see from my profile, I do a lot of work with calculus and physics. Precalculus is the foundation for these subjects, covering functions, polynomial roots, and especially trigonometry: sin / cosine / tangent, complementary functions, unit circle, identities, equations, formulas and so forth. I would be happy to work with you or your child on precalculus and get you ready for whatever comes next!
SAT Math

SAT Math

As a recipient of a perfect 800 score on the math SAT back in the day, I know what it takes to get through this type of high-stress test. I can help you review the key concepts including ratios, probability, geometry and graphs, as well as help with test-taking strategy, such how to make best use of your time and how to make better guesses when that's necessary. I have worked with many students, and typically focus on helping students achieve about 100 point improvements in their math score, from about 600, to 700 or better. You may see other tutors promise more, but they are not the ones taking the test! I know what it takes to help students master the material so that they can be successful on the test.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

Discrete math is one of my favorite topics to teach, and I have many satisfied students in person and online to show for it! Set theory, combinatorics, graph theory, propositional logic, mathematical induction, boolean algebra. Fun stuff! I work with a lot of students here at Wyzant and on other platforms, including discrete math and discrete structures for computer science. I have taken (and received an A) in college level discrete math (i.e. math for computer scientists vs. calculus), and regularly teach the subject on Wyzant and other services, including college courses using textbooks by Epp and by Rosen.
Finite Math,

Finite Math

I tutor Finite Math for a number of online students, including linear systems, matrix algebra, probability and statistics. I would be happy to help with your Finite Math needs.

Great lesson

Doug is an amazing tutor that my son relates very well with and learns more from Doug than he does during class. The last session my son said,”Doug is the smartest person he has ever met”. Thank you Doug!!!

Paige, 4 lessons with Doug

Very helpful and patient.

He helped my son with his AP calculus test prep. He was very patient with him and very helpful and gave him very good instruction. My son’s grade improved after having some lesson with him. Thank you Doug!

Yuki, 17 lessons with Doug

Great explanations and confidence boost

Doug is amazing at explaining things. He is very patient and has given me a lot more confidence in my math skills. I highly recommend him to others. He will meet in person which is very helpful.

Stacey, 2 lessons with Doug

Very knowledgeable and explains very well

Dough takes the time to explain so you understand. He understands the subject amazingly (knowledgeable). I would definitely recommend him for tutoring AP Physics.

Sebas, 11 lessons with Doug

Knowledgeable and flexible tutor

Doug has explained concepts in an accessible way and has helped my son feel more confident in what he is learning. He was flexible when we asked to add a tutoring session before a test.

Excellent AP Calculus Tutor

My son was struggling with some topics in his AP Calculus BC class, so we reached out to Doug for help after reading many positive reviews in his profile. After my son’s first session with Doug, he felt that he had a much better understanding of the topics. Doug was able to explain difficult topics in much easier form to help my son understand and further apply to problems. We highly recommend Doug.

Oliva, 33 lessons with Doug

Excellent tutor

Doug worked with my daughter, a HS senior in AP Calculus, to help her understand concepts she was having difficulty with. My daughter reported that Doug was absolutely great - he was able to break down the work in a way that was very understandable by her, and she felt very confident after the sessions with Doug. She gives him her highest rating.

Lauren , 6 lessons with Doug

Very patient and knowledgeable!!

Over the course of the pandemic my twin boys have taken an unintended gap year from college courses.... meaning they have done very little to keep their brains sharp, especially in the area of math. Doug has already in one session helped them dust off their skills and we will continue to book with him going forward!

Holly, 1 lesson with Doug

Knowledgeable AP Physics tutor

Patient and helpful in assisting my son with prep for the AP Physics 1 test. Also helpful in covering ground that was missed during virtual schooling. Recommend this tutor to anyone needing help with Physics.
