I graduated high school in 2008 and attended the University of North Texas from 2008 to 2012. I graduated high school in 2008 and attended the University of North Texas from 2008 to 2012. I studied International Business, Economics and Development so that I would be prepared to work in the globalized society we live in today. I studied Computer Science from 2013-2014. In that pursuit, I decided I would like to teach, so I became certified to teach Mathematics and taught Secondary Mathematics for 6 years. I taught most courses available through Calculus BC and also obtained a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. During that time, I tutored in mathematics and programming skills.

I took the knowledge I had gained through years of studying and tutoring programming skills and began working as a full-stack engineer in 2018. Since that time I've worked in numerous roles, with startups and large enterprise companies. Currently I'm developing curriculum as a Full stack Instructor for a bootcamp.

My approach to instruction is a question based approach. Students generally don't know what they don't know, and therefore don't know what questions to ask, so I attempt to answer student questions, and also provide students with the stimulus to ask the questions they need to ask. For example, when faced with the problem, "How do I multiply all of the values in an array by 2?" There are underlying questions to be answered, such as "How do I access each value in the array?", "How do I iterate over the array?", "Will I need to use a lambda function?" or "Is there an array method I can use?". Rather than answer the question directly, we work through the underlying questions, in order to help the student to apply this new knowledge to answer the question.

Data Science

I've worked on all aspects of data science in projects to predict target variables. I have experience with classification and time series analysis. I understand the data science method well, essentially data gathering and cleaning, EDA, building models, and presenting findings. I've learned these skills through a Master's in Education where I had to study the findings of my own research and also personal projects and training.

Patient and understanding

Had my first session with Stephen just yesterday and I feel so good about the instruction I received! He made me feel comfortable and like no question is a dumb question. Looking forward to working with him again!

He makes you feel relaxed during the session.

At this point time I am a Python rookie. He is not and and is quite happy to share the knowledge he has gained over the years. He has taught me so far about loops and percentages and how to properly write them in a code to determine the correct answer. Will I use Stephen's talents in my next class? Most likely as I am only about half way through my degree program.

Friendly and helpful tutor

Stephen has been helping me through my data science bootcamp. He's done an excellent job helping me troubleshoot projects, review content, and has given me great real-world examples of work so I can see the relevance in what I'm learning.
