About Avi

Bio

Everything comes down to history for me. I've been a history geek for my my entire life (or at least since age 4, since I don't remember my life before that). My idea of fun is to read history (currently on Robert Caro's biography of Lyndon Johnson, Volume 4). I've tutored history for high school and college students for three years, I've done archival history work for the New York Historical Society and Harvard Business school, and I've read more history. Everything comes down to history for me. I've been a history geek for my my entire life (or at least since age 4, since I don't remember my life before that). My idea of fun is to read history (currently on Robert Caro's biography of Lyndon Johnson, Volume 4). I've tutored history for high school and college students for three years, I've done archival history work for the New York Historical Society and Harvard Business school, and I've read more history. Since then, I've also tutored English, and taught such odd subjects as children's theater and the board game Go.

All my tutoring experience before WyzAnt is through friend-of-a-friend links. I've never gotten a gig by being assigned by a computer (or by an agency that doesn't know me), which is why I'm on WyzAnt -- so the student and I can decide whether we're a good match. I always want to get to know my students well.

My way of teaching is simple -- I don't want to spoon-feed people answers, leaving them unable to come up with any the next time they have a paper to write. I should be helping people figure out the answers themselves. Every session with me (in history, English, theater, or Go) is me asking questions, until it switches on the light bulb in the student's head. The best tutor is one who eventually makes themselves unnecessary.

I came to Elementary Math tutoring the old-fashioned way: learning on the job. I was originally a history and English tutor (and I still do that), but later I became a general homework helper for all subjects, including math and science. The key to teaching elementary math is to always remember what it felt like as a child, when math can seem scarier than it is.

For European history, I read a lot of classic history books, like C.V. Wedgwood's history of the Thirty Years War or Robert Massie's histories of Peter the Great and the Dreadnought Project. At the same time, I know that these books are not always up to date, and I try to keep up online with the latest scholarship.

I started out as a history buff before I learned geography. It's rather difficult to learn history without picking up on geography as well. Starting with history means that you don't just learn where countries are on a map -- you also learn what geography means for people around the world. For example, why do most large empires start in river valleys, and almost none in mountains? And why are there exceptions to that, like the Incas?

I have tutored Social Studies for High School and College students since 2008, and for Elementary School students since this year. My main background is in history, and when I teach Social Studies, I think of it as the history of current events.
