About Jonathan

A TEACHER OF WRITING
I began tutoring novice writers twenty-five years ago. Soon thereafter I earned my teaching degree from Tufts University and trained at the leading teacher apprenticeship program, at Shady Hill School. Over the years I have taught English, history (including AP United States History), and speech and debate--but I have always considered myself a teacher of writing.

HELPING STUDENTS BUILD THEIR SKILLS
For most of my teaching and tutoring over the years, I have specialized in helping high-school and college students develop the skills and strategies they need to be self-sufficient in their nonfiction writing. This includes helping writers to:
- approach the challenges of each project with a sense of purpose;
- engage in appropriate, productive background research;
- develop working ideas that address the needs of the project;
- gather and select fitting source material;
- draft prose with a degree of fluency; and
- revise to maximize the essay's effectiveness.

NB: I tutor primarily online. The tools Wyzant provides make for a positive experience, and I find working online offers flexibility for both tutor and tutee.

A SOLID TRACK RECORD WITH LEADING INSTITUTIONS
I have been teaching history and politics for the past ten years at The American School in England, where I have also started a speech & debate squad and founded a local league. In addition to my regular teaching and tutoring, I serve as a Sutton Trust / Fulbright Commission Mentor for underprivileged college applicants, assisting them in developing their college application essays. Earlier in my career I taught a course on the personal essay over several summers, for The Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth (CTY). This coming summer I will serve as Academic Dean for CTY's Baltimore site, at Johns Hopkins. I have also been an instructor for semester-long online courses for educators, with the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have been a speech and debate coach for eight years and currently serve as my league's Chair. I have been teaching speech and debate as a formal subject for five years at my current school. This year I earned the Degree of Special Distinction from the National Speech and Debate Association for my accomplishments.

Social Studies

Over the past 12 years, I have been teaching high school social studies full time. I taught first at a Quaker school in the US, then for the past nine years an international school. During that time I have taught a variety of courses, including United States history, Western Civilization (1400 to present), World history. Earlier, while teaching middle school, most of my work was in social studies. My apprenticeship was also mostly in social studies. Lastly: My undergraduate degree was chiefly in the social studies arena, with psychology, archaeology, anthropology, and history.
