Hey, I'm Andrea! I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Barnard College, Columbia University in 2008 and received and MS in Human Nutrition from Columbia University in 2011. In college, I was a laboratory teaching assistant for a semester of Child Development in the Psychology Department. This experience helped me realize how much I enjoy helping other students to learn material. I understand how frustrating it can feel to struggle to understand a subject and to feel like giving up. In my personal experience, I found Calculus to be extremely difficult in high school, but I loved Calculus I, II and III in college. The difference was entirely due to my college professor and his teaching method which I try to utilize in my own tutoring. My professor brought a levity to the class which made it a pleasure to attend. I try to emulate this in my own tutoring style. School can be stressful. If I can help students relax and enjoy our sessions, I have found they are more likely to understand and grasp the material they are struggling with. I break down difficult concepts into smaller more manageable parts so that my students don’t feel overwhelmed. I do frequent check ins with my students to make sure they understand concepts before we proceed forward. If possible, I will add in additional outside resources as needed. If a lesson plan is provided, my student and I can review it in advance so they have an extra edge as a new concept is introduced.
