Hello there, I'm Colin! I began my career as a camp counselor at 12 years old, landed my first job teaching in a middle school at 19 - and now have six years experience as a math teacher in the New York City Department of Education. Even in college, student well-being has been my focus: I completed a double minor at NYU in Computer Science Education and Child/Adolescent Mental Health, and a graduate degree from Saint John's University in 7th-12th Grade Mathematics Education. I have always been passionate about helping children and young adults to learn and feel more confident in their abilities - a passion that I try to encompass during every interaction I have with my students!

I've had my mix of good and bad teachers in school - but my favorites were the ones who took time to connect with me, and had the patience to make sure I understood each topic to the fullest. My teaching philosophy is simple: there is no such thing as a bad student. Having taught using a variety of techniques (and at times, a variety of languages) for nearly a decade, I can confidently say that some teaching methods can work better than others - but it can vary depending on the student! It's a lesson that takes a while for students to internalize, but is one I find extremely important: no matter what you may think, you are not bad at math! Maybe you just need math taught to you a different way.

I aim to do two things with tutoring: help students with whatever mathematics subject they are struggling with, and instill them with a sense of confidence in their own abilities! While I am comfortable creating resources, I am also happy to include any resources that students or parents provide - since this can help personalize lessons to what your child may be seeing in the school building! I am easy to reach, tend to respond quickly, and am always open to new students. Feel free to reach out to ask any questions you may have, or to schedule a tutoring session!

Chess

Chess

I played my first game of chess when I was in second grade, and have been an avid fan of it ever since! Career-wise, I spent two years as co-lead of the chess club in my school building, and regularly visit the current lead to brush up on my skills. In addition to playing with real boards and pieces, I am also experienced with chess applications (like LiChess, Chess.com, and Play Magnus).
Common Core

Common Core

I have taught six years in the NYCDOE, where our focus was aligning lessons to the Common Core and Next Gen Learning Standards in New York State. My graduate coursework at Saint Johns also studied these standards, with a focus on building effective lessons to address them. My tutoring work in school buildings also used questions from previous Regents exams, which are aligned to Common Core.
Geometry

Geometry

I taught Geometry for 2 years in the NYCDOE, and took multiple courses on teaching it at Saint John's University. In addition, I tutored a number of students in Geometry in preparation for the SAT and NYS Regents exam.
Poker

Poker

I learned how to play poker from my parents, who taught me games like Blackjack, Texas Hold'em, and Five-Card Draw when I was eight years old. I do not gamble, but I have years of experience teaching and playing these games at summer camps, with family and friends, and with students. I own multiple sets of poker chips and cards, and have used poker in lessons on probability in the past.
Regents

Regents

I spent 6 years teaching in NYC Public schools, with the majority of my courses being Regents classes (Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2). I have taken multiple classes on Next Gen Learning Standards, which are the standards that are tested on modern-day Regents exams. In addition, many of the questions I have brought to tutoring sessions are pulled from jmap.com - which is a compendium of previous Regents exams and practice activities.
