I'm Brett! I am an attorney and political scientist. I attended Stanford University and received a PhD (Political Science), a law degree, and a BA (with distinction in Political Science and Philosophy). At Stanford, I spent eight years as a one-on-one tutor at the University's writing center. Through that program, I helped college students and graduate students with nearly every type of writing, including theses, cover letters, application essays, and class assignments. In each session, I strive to help students both improve specific pieces of writing and their overall writing skills. Together, the student and I read their work aloud; doing so allows the student to easily recognize mistakes and areas for improvement. We then brainstorm how particular sentences or paragraphs can be improved. With all students -- but particularly younger ones -- I seek to guide the student to fix their own mistakes. After we have discovered the right language, I explain the concept we reviewed and how they can apply that concept in future writing. Using this method, I've successfully taught students ranging from novice writers to advanced graduate students.

In addition to writing, I also taught political science courses at Stanford as a graduate teaching assistant. Approximately twice a week, I would run discussion-based sessions that reviewed the essential concepts from the course's recent lectures. The goal was to help students understand some of the more difficult classroom concepts. I would prepare real-world examples of political science theories to discuss with students, using those examples to demonstrate the various facets of the idea we were studying. When writing assignments were due, my discussion sessions would focus on essay structure and organization.

Finally, I volunteered for six years as a tutor for school-aged students. I taught virtually every subject required of these students, including Math, English, Science, and History. I'm always happy to work with kids of any age!
