2019: Ranked in the top 1 percent of all 17,500 tutors on Wyzant!

I am a National Board Certified English Teacher with 15 years of experience who holds valid state teaching credentials, an undergraduate degree in English Education, and a Master's degree in Instructional Design. Although I taught in brick and mortar schools for most of my career, the last five years have been spent teaching at a virtual charter school and tutoring online. I love working one on one with students virtually because it gives me the opportunity to meet people from all over the world!

I am creative and fun, yet rigorous. My tutoring sessions are lively, yet informative. I like to use games and various forms of educational technology in order to pinpoint where a student's strengths and weaknesses are and then tailor instruction to meet their specific needs.

I am experienced in preparing middle school students for the SSAT, ISEE, and HSPT; high school students for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT; and college students/adults for the ATI TEAS/HESI Nursing School Exam. I use informative PowerPoint slides, practice tests, worksheets, interactive activities, online resources, games, and videos as I work with students to prepare them for all sections of their test. I usually like to assign "homework" so that review and practice can be done between sessions, too.

Need help with writing or editing? That's my specialty! I love helping students improve their writing skills, and I especially enjoy brainstorming and coming up with ideas. I have helped many students craft winning college essays that have gotten them accepted into schools such as NYU and UC-Berkley. I also love helping students with creative writing. I recently encouraged two of my students to enter different poetry contests—and they won!

Please contact me to schedule your first session and create a plan to help you accomplish your goals. I can't wait to meet you!

Common Core,

Common Core

I am very familiar with the secondary English Common Core standards that most schools use. Throughout my experiences teaching in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Nevada I saw that most states follow the Common Core standards under various names—for example, Nevada calls them the “Nevada State Standards,” but they are almost an exact copy of the Common Core.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I am new to Wyzant, but I have worked extensively with students preparing them for various entrance exams with another online company. Although my background is in English, I have a passion for making math accessible to students who sometimes find math challenging. I am familiar with the new Common Core curriculum and I really enjoy working one on one with students online to strengthen their math skills. I also provide free access to several online gamified resources for independent study so that the student can practice on their own between sessions as well.

I am a state certified former middle and high school English teacher with 15 years of experience. I received National Board Certification in 2010. I taught at a virtual charter school for three years, which offers online curriculum to many homeschooled children. I have a full year of English curriculum that can be modified and would be appropriate for a middle or high school student. My lessons cover the skills and standards included in the Common Core Standards for English. I would love to share my curriculum and lessons with you or to help guide you through another program or course. As a student of mine, you will also get free access to various online resources that will provide differentiated lessons that are tailored just for YOU at YOUR level and then progressively get harder as you improve!
Reading,

Reading

I am a state licensed English teacher with National Board Certification in Adolescent and Young Adult English Language Arts. I have 13 years of experience teaching middle and high school English in the classroom and for several of those years I was also hired to write questions for the state End of Course exam where I served as part of the testing panel as well. I help students engage with the text through visualization techniques similar to the Lindamood-Bell method of instruction in which students are encouraged to make mental pictures and imagine what they’re reading and then verbalize what they see. I guide students through annotating the text and help them to become active readers. With the Common Core’s emphasis on state testing, the reading skills and testing strategies I teach help students perform on end of course state exams, school admissions tests, and in their classes. I hope to foster a love of reading!

Study Skills

I have worked with students one on one (throughout my 13 year career as a classroom teacher and online tutor) to help them with study skills including: organization, time management, goal setting and monitoring progress, test taking strategies, diagnosing specific content strengths and weaknesses, figuring out learning styles, memorization techniques like using mnemonic devices, note taking and annotating texts, identifying and capitalizing on intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, and more!

ACT English

I am a National Board Certified and state licensed English teacher with 14 years of experience. I have been a full-time testing prep instructor and private tutor for the past year, and I love it! I have helped many students improve their reading/writing scores on various standardized tests. For the ACT, I have developed many lessons on key testing strategies and content skills, and I use a multitude of different practice tests and online resources to help you prepare. I will show you the common grammar rules that are commonly tested and help you to diagnose your strengths and target your weaknesses. Studies show that the best way to improve your score is through exposure and review. In other words, you want to be able to take as many different practice tests as you can, and then have somebody review your answers with you and fill in your knowledge gaps. Let an experienced English teacher show you how to analyze sentence structure and rhetoric—because remember, you have to choose the BEST answer, not necessarily the ONLY answer, and this can often be very misleading to students. For now, it should be clear that even though I’m not the ONLY choice for your tutoring needs, I am the BEST choice! (See what I did there? Haha) I can’t wait to meet you! :)

I am a National Board and State Certified English teacher with 13 years of classroom experience and four years of experience as an online teacher and private tutor. I specialize in test prep and have experience preparing students for the SAT and ACT. Studies show that students benefit most from exposure to practice tests and I have many to share with you! The strategy I have found most useful for students who struggle with reading is an active/close reading strategy where students engage with the text and practice visualizing and then verbalizing what they read. This is similar to the Lindamood-Bell method of instruction for reading and comprehension.

Robyn helped my daughter in acing SSAT English section(verbal & reading). Robyn took time to understand strengths and weakness of my daughter and then worked on a plan to get her to her target score. Robyn was very patient and had great attention to detail. I would highly recommend Robyn to anybody looking to get help with SSAT prep. My daughter scored a 99 percentile, thanks to Robyn.

Review for Robyn

Robyn helped me 4th grader with his SSAT prep, and helped him achieve a score that was in the high 90s percentile! Robyn is an awesome tutor – she has a range of techniques and online tools to help engage kids in verbal, math and reading preparation for the test. My son always looked forward to his sessions with Robyn and gladly did the homework she assigned. Robyn was always patient, engaging, encouraging and had a sense of humor, which made the tutoring sessions a lot of fun for him. I would highly recommend Robyn for SSAT or ISEE prep – she is very knowledgeable and ways always happy to answer any questions that we had as parents too.

Robyn helped our children on writing essays

Robyn is so helpful! My daughter is in fifth grade but she wasn't ready for writing 4 paragraph essays for her isee lower test. Robyn engaged her in one session. After 5-6 sessions, my daughter told me she feels ready. Then I asked Robyn whether she could help my son on his essays for highschool application. She is more than flexible for it. Robyn helped him understand how to write his essays for particular audience, i.e. the adminission team. Her advice was all based on my son's interest and his essay draft. Her comments made him think more deeply about who he is and what his passion is. My son was motivated to modify his essays, and they turned out much better than I expected, after 4 sessions (for 3 essays). My son's confidence on his writing skills and himself boost too! We appreciate Robyn's help from the bottom of out hearts. She is a great tutor!
