Hello! I'm Tyler, and I tutor in math, physics and mechanical engineering. I graduated from NC State with B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering and have been working as a full-time mechanical engineer for 5 years.

My own life experiences with math have heavily shaped my approach to tutoring. Growing up, math didn't always come easily to me, but I worked hard at it and eventually enjoyed it once I understood it on a deeper level. My goal in tutoring any subject is to help students develop a solid understanding in whatever way is most beneficial and engaging to them. My typical approach for a one-time session is to focus on addressing specific questions or on reviewing a particular topic in-depth. As time permits, I like to explain concepts and then guide students through practice problems to reinforce those concepts. I have personally found this to be the most effective approach for math and physics especially. For ongoing tutoring relationships, I may spend more time up front reviewing what the student has already learned in the course to make sure they have a solid foundation for new material. Then, over the course of multiple sessions, we typically work through practice problems and address specific topics as questions come up.

To date, I have 2 years of experience working with high-school students in pre-calculus and calculus. I have worked with some students on a near-weekly basis for an entire semester, and I have also worked with students on an occasional, as-needed basis. In college, I was part of a group called the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Ambassadors. In this role, I provided weekly tutoring (one-on-one or in small group settings) in mechanical engineering subjects such as statics, dynamics, and thermodynamics. I have about 3 years of experience tutoring in these college-level mechanical engineering courses.

I hope you've enjoyed learning a little about me. I look forward to working with you!

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

I have BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from NC State University. In addition to completing Calculus 1, 2 and 3, I also used calculus throughout my mechanical engineering courses. I also have about 4 years of experience tutoring in calculus.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I have BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from NC State University. I used ODEs heavily throughout my engineering studies, and I am also familiar with solving some PDEs such as diffusion and wave equations.
Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

I have BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from NC State University. At the master's level, I focused primarily on dynamics and controls. Professionally, I work full-time as an electromechanical systems engineer.
Physics

Physics

I have BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from NC State University. After completing the introductory physics courses (mechanics and electromagnetism), I spent most of the rest of my mechanical engineering studies focusing on advanced topics in the subject of mechanics.

Dynamic

I was struggling with some feedback control homework. It was material that Tyler had not seen in a while and was not super confident in but he was able to figure it out and explain it to me on the fly.

Great Teacher!

He did good job explaining me the material and it was really understandable and feasible. He went through step by step to give me a clear idea how it works with fluid dynamic problem! Thank you a lot!

Knowledgeable and helpful

Statics is a key component of mechanical engineering and is a very difficult course. Tyler is able to break the information down so that it is easier to understand.

Tyler is a knowledgeable and patient tutor.

This is the first tutoring with Tyler for my son and he is very supportive and knowledgeable. He explains the subject well and how to look at the problem and solve it. Looking forward to more tutoring from Tyler soon. Thanks.
