About Mahen

Hello,

My name is Mahen, and I am a tutor certified through the National Tutoring Association (NTA).

Since 2003, I have been working with youth (ages 5-18) and adults in the capacity of tutoring, organizing sports and educational camps, teaching, and volunteering. I attended Needham B. Broughton High School as a freshman and sophomore, and attended the North Carolina School of Science of Mathematics as a junior and senior. Throughout, and thereafter at the North Carolina State University (NCSU), I have been seeking opportunities to help others as much as possible.

I graduated from NCSU in December, 2012. I double-majored in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and minored in Psychology. I am working towards a Personal Fitness Trainer certification.

I have attended multiple leadership seminars, courses, forums, and camps, including LeaderShape, Advance Leaders Program (NCSU), CSLEPS Visionary Leadership Certificate workshops (NCSU), Shelton Leadership Forum, and others. In addition, I have been focusing on educational methodologies, including through a course for tutors (Introduction to College Tutoring, at NCSU), to maximize learning in the most efficient way possible. Coupled with my interest in just about every subject, the leadership and tutoring (and teaching) experience has helped me develop efficient strategies to help students effectively and efficiently learn and quickly become independent learners.

In September 2012, I started, with generous support, a community tutoring program at the Islamic Association of Raleigh. The tutors are volunteers consisting of college students and professionals from the community. The program continues to be helpful for the members of the community, especially because we focus on helping develop students into confident, independent learners.

I do not prefer to have too much "free" time. Instead, I try to invest my time into opportunities that involve helping others and providing opportunities of personal and professional growth for my fellow world citizens. In addition, I love sports and working with youth, particularly because of their energy and eagerness to achieve. If I am not teaching, tutoring, mentoring, volunteering, or spending time with my wife, three daughters, parents, or four siblings, I am most likely learning about something. As a Muslim, this lifestyle brings more than enough fun and enjoyment.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I am a Muslim and I have studied Arabic for several years, including under a graduate (PhD) of Al-Azhar in Cairo, Egypt. I have a special requirement to continue its ongoing study, and this drives my language enhancement. In addition, I have taught the language to many students at various learning levels.

Differential Equations

I took a differential equations course in high school (NCSSM) and one at NCSU for my engineering majors. We used differential equations in courses for both engineering degrees (aerodynamics I and II, fluid dynamics, boundary layer theory, mechanical vibrations, heat and mass transfer, and so on). At NCSU, I also tutored differential equations (as a private tutor).

Fortran

As part of my Aerospace Engineering degree, I had to take a Fortran course in the beginning. I used Fortran for programs relating to the degree, given its simple organization and functionality. Often, we used Fortran for projects involving fluid flows and others applications requiring iterations, though, later, we also used MATLAB.

MATLAB

I double-majored in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and minored in Psychology. As part of my majors, MATLAB was a must. We used MATLAB for labs, projects, and our senior design projects. For one of my majors, we used MATLAB to design a model R/C aircraft, including for wing design and structural analysis. I am a tutor certified through the National Tutoring Association (NTA).

Mechanical Engineering

In December 2012, I graduated with a double major in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. I took most of the undergraduate classes offered in the MAE (Mechanical-Aerospace-Engineering) department. In addition, I was part of a special topics class (one-semester duration) wherein my team had to re-design/re-program the cooling system for a hybrid SUV (NCSU's EcoCAR).

Study Skills

Over the years, I have attended several workshops, seminars, conferences, retreats, and classes (courses) through which I have learned effective studying strategies. The strategies include a focus on structure, chronology/order of topics, duration and frequency of study, and relevant resource access and utility. My tutees, at the tutoring program I started and oversee and others, have found these strategies effective, as did/do I during my own study sessions.

Great tutor!!! — I reached out to Mahen when I realized that I would need help with online Statistics. Math, of any sort, has never been a strong point for me. Mahen is very patient and able to present the information in a way that I can understand it. If I don't understand one approach, he's fast to respond with another. He is enthusiastic during sessions and shows a genuine interest in helping. He is also profes ...
