Hi! I have an undergraduate degree in print journalism, a master's degree in Education, and a Minnesota K-12 license to teach English as a Second Language. I have worked full-time for over 15 years as an elementary school teacher for students that speak other languages. On the side, I have also been tutoring adult language learners for over 20 years as well as helping native English speakers write and edit papers.

English

English has always been my favorite subject to teach. I have a bachelor's degree in print journalism and worked as a newspaper editor during college, so I am very familiar with all the rules of grammar and writing. I also have a license to teach English as a Second Language, and further learned about grammar and writing through my ESL coursework. Finally, I have a master's degree in Education, which helps me relay information to students in a way that helps them learn and retain the information.

I have been teaching ESL for about 10 years. I taught ESL to Japanese students in public schools in Japan for three years, and have been teaching ESL to elementary school students in Minnesota for five years. I also have been tutoring adults in ESL for about 10 years. I understand the importance of learning English through practice with speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. I have many, many materials to focus on each of those areas. I earned a K-12 Minnesota teaching license through my coursework at the University of Minnesota in 2006, and I also earned a master's degree in Education at that time.

My undergraduate degree was in print journalism, so I took a lot of classes in grammar, writing, and editing. Then I worked for various newspapers as both a reporter and as a news editor for over five years, which helped me become even more familiar with grammar and common mistakes. Finally, I went to graduate school for an ESL teaching license and a master's degree in education. Once again, I had many classes covering grammar and writing. Now I work full-time as an ESL teacher and teach grammar to my students on a daily basis.

My undergraduate degree is in print journalism, so during my college coursework, I took several classes on what to look for when editing articles or papers. I became very familiar with the most used style guides. I worked as an editor for my university's student newspaper and for Eau Claire, Wisconsin's daily newspaper, The Leader Telegram. I also spent two years working as a writer and editor for the St. Paul School District. After that, I earned a master's degree in Education and an ESL teaching license from the University of Minnesota, which again introduced me to classes on editing student work. I have about 15 years of experience editing work such as letters of recommendation, personal statements, papers for college coursework, resumes, cover letters, handbooks, and newspaper articles.

I have a K-12 Minnesota teaching license for English as a Second Language, and much of my coursework focused on teaching reading. I also have a master's degree in Education, so I know how to identify learning styles and teach in ways that will be most beneficial for each learner. I've been teaching full-time in a metro-area elementary school for five years, and prior to that, I taught in Japan for three years. I have access to hundreds of books from beginner to advanced that I can use to help you or your children improve at reading.

Writing is my passion. I love helping students strengthen their papers, essays, resumes, etc. and even helping beginning writers learn how to write a sentence or write a paragraph. I can help you organize your paper, fix grammatical mistakes, strengthen introductions and conclusions, keep your paper cohesive, add support, or find whatever else your paper might need. I love doing this kind of work. I worked as a newspaper reporter for about 6 years, and as a newspaper editor for two years, so I am used to reading through text with a careful eye. I also worked as a writer and editor for the St. Paul School District for two years before going back to school to become an English teacher. I still do freelance writing on the side, and I've had freelance work published in Eau Claire, Wisconsin's daily newspaper, The Leader-Telegram, and also in the Hmong Times.

Great coaching and very flexible with time.

Becky helped our son with an advanced HS writing course: she was able to coach him through the writing process on several occasions, helping him look for ways to improve his essays, and making him rethink or defend his choices. Altogether it made him more thoughtful and thorough about what he was writing and why, and through that he was better prepared with each exercise. She never told him what to write, but asked him a lot of questions and asked for clarification, which is why I used the word "Coach" very specifically. Becky met with our son one-to-one for a first meeting, and thereafter met with him online, where they would use Google Docs and other internet services to communicate and exchange ideas. This worked extremely well and made the most efficient use of their time, also allowing for short-notice assistance, which was often needed because of the pace of the particular class. I would recommend Becky highly, and we will use her services again if needed.

Very Professional!

I revised my personal statement for grad school a million times and was stuck trying to make it sound more professional yet personal. Becky really helped me get my words across. Right on target!

My son needed help with reading and general test taking. Reading is such an essential part to the overall test, and Becky was able to zero in right away with the areas he needed to focus in on.I felt it was important to stay out of the process and let my son achieve his own results. Although each lesson was private, I was still able to know what the lesson was about, what he had achieved and if he was finishing his homework. Becky always had detailed feedback to each lesson. Becky even helped him with exercises to help ease anxiety over test taking. My son was so excited after finishing his ACT that he actually can't wait for his results. I know what he has learned will help carry through into college as well.
