About Rachel

Bio

I have been tutoring German on and off for eighteen years, and English for fifteen years. I have ten years of experience teaching at the university level. My private pupils have ranged from elementary and high school students to college students, grad students and other adults. I will work with you to determine what your goals are and which learning strategies work best for you, then tailor our sessions to meet your needs.

In 1996, my high school German teacher recommended me as a tutor for a younger student who was struggling in second-year German. After helping him raise his grade in the class from an F to a B, I was hooked on tutoring and have been helping students and community members improve their German ever since. I have a doctorate in Modern German Literature and Culture from Indiana University. I have lived, studied, and taught in Germany and Austria several times. Since 2001, I have been teaching German language, literature, and culture classes at the university level, but I still enjoy working with private pupils whenever I can. Whether you wish to start learning German for fun, need help with a class, or want to brush up on the German you learned years ago, I would be happy to assist you.

Keeps me calm

Rachel has taught me a lot about the German language works. I was really stressed out about the class because everything was in German. She has patiently gone over what is important in each chapter and what is important to focus on. I went from thinking I'm going to fail the class to really enjoying it and looking forward to practicing with both her and my classmates. She is perfectly fluent and I highly recommend her!

Excellent tutor

Rachel is a great German teacher. She understands the needs of the language learner. She has developed exercises in the areas of German grammar. She is able to systematically assess your level and tailor the teaching to the areas that need improvement. I have recently started with her and have greatly enjoyed our lessons so far.
