About Digby

Bio

I taught AP & IB Physics for six years in the late 90's, with exceptional success for my students on all AP and IB exams. I've also taught regular physics (as opposed to college prep). And I taught Algebra 1 through Calculus in rural Louisiana through the Teach For America program before I got licensed to teach physics. These and other teaching jobs involved quite a bit of one-on-one work with students.

Even though I was known for guiding my students to good results on the AP and IB physics tests, that wasn't what mattered most to me. I wanted to share my excitement and love for math and physics. The most important results for me were seeing students get excited about physics, and start doing their own exploring. Test scores come and go, but attitude and enthusiasm are forever.

My approach to tutoring is to ask questions and listen first, before I say much. I want to find out where you're at, what you understand and don't understand, and how you feel about what you're studying. Sometimes students are completely lost and we need to go all the way back to the beginning, but just as often, they only need some gaps filled in, and some concepts strengthened. And they need confidence. My job is to figure out where the gaps are, and help the student fill them, and work things through enough that the you have confidence in your own ability, and can take control of your own progress.

Got me through a tough condensed general physics class with an acceptable grade.

Physics was the last class I needed to take to qualify for a graduate program for a medical career. I took a 4-week accelerated summer physics course to complete the requirement. The course required algebra and trig. I hadn't done any trig since I began college more than 10 years before. I had done algebra more recently for chem courses, but not at the level I needed for my physics course. Digby was not the first tutor I worked with. The first tutor was frustrated because I didn't know some of the basic physics stuff that he thought I should know. He also showed me some algebra problem-solving techniques that confused me. Digby taught me all the trig I needed for my course in less than an hour, and then showed me how to break things down to figure out how to apply the trig without getting confused. In less than I week I felt competent and confident using basic trig functions to solve physics problems. Digby also worked through physics concepts and techniques with me so that I started solving problems on my own. When we started working together, I was often very anxious about physics. By the time we were done, I actually really enjoyed solving some types of problems. I also went from being lost in class and lab, to being able to follow most of what was going on. I definitely recommend Digby for college level physics tutoring.

Very helpful at getting me to understand what is going on

Taught me physics, very knowledgeable in this field and very passionate in helping students excel in this subject. Will definitely use him again and I'd recommend it to a friend.

Physics tutor for HS Jr.

Digby had a great ability to tie things together for me. I was struggling and starting to be behind. Not only got me up-to-date but made everything clear so that I could master the tests and exams. Very pleased with my AP score! I recommend him!

Knowledgeable tutor

Digby helped my daughter prepare for the AP Physics exam. She had two sessions with him and he helped tremendously. He taught her the basics quickly and had success with her where her high school physics teacher had failed. He taught her new strategies to help fill in the holes and help her gain confidence in the material. I only wish Digby had been teaching my daughter all year!

He is the tutor that saved student's life!

We go over a lot things, and he is professional on Physics! He explains my questions well! Digby makes me kind of like Physics right now. He explained every detail that you need to know and skills to solve Phys problems. Guys, I highly recommend him to be your tutor!

Great Teacher

Digby is able to explain complex topics in an effective and understandable way. He also makes sure that the student understands what they are working out while keeping enough distance to let the student work out problems on their own, stepping in when he sees they are having trouble. Overall, Digby is highly capable and recommended.

Knowledgeable and Passionate Tutor

Digby has been an outstanding tutor for me in my Physics class. After just two sessions, I have been able to confidently work through Torque, Static Friction, Tension, and many more problems. I like that he will help you gain an in-depth understanding of what's going on with the problem so that you will have the proper building blocks to tackle similar scenarios in physics. For instance, now that I deeply understand Newtons Second Law of motion, I have been able to grasp new material in class much quicker than before. I would highly recommend him as a Physics Tutor.

Excellent in communicating with students

We have had a couple of Physics tutors and Digby is by far my son's favorite. He finds many tutors robotic and not human enough. Not only does Dibgy teach well, he connects well with students, which makes him effective. My son has always enjoyed physics and is more confident in preparing for the AP exam.
