Bio

To learn a person should be happy, relaxed, and engaged. Over the years of teaching in and out of the classroom I have discovered this to be especially true for learners that have unique needs or who struggle. I have experience working with learners of all ability levels in and outside of the classroom. I currently work at a school for unique learners between the ages of 2 and 20 who have not historically succeeded in the classroom, but I have over 8 years of experience teaching grades K4...

To learn a person should be happy, relaxed, and engaged. Over the years of teaching in and out of the classroom I have discovered this to be especially true for learners that have unique needs or who struggle. I have experience working with learners of all ability levels in and outside of the classroom. I currently work at a school for unique learners between the ages of 2 and 20 who have not historically succeeded in the classroom, but I have over 8 years of experience teaching grades K4 through 8th. I have taught in public, private, and parochial schools in both Kansas and Louisiana. My primary focus has been phonics, reading, writing, elementary math, and middle school science and literature.

In the past I have accepted high school students, but at this time I would like to focus on elementary and middle school students.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I have experience with dyslexic learners inside and outside of the classroom. I primarily use a multi-sensory phonics and spelling system when working with non-reading learners or learners who are significantly behind the reading level expected for their age. It may take longer for dyslexic students to read fluently, but once they are reading fluently, no one can take that away from them.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have my elementary education degree from Centenary College. I love teaching math and reading skills and have found my biggest successes in working with elementary students in math. I believe in multisensory instruction whenever possible.
Elementary Math

I have years of experience teaching elementary math to many students. I have taught from many different curriculum providers and feel comfortable assisting with homework and enrichment for grades K-6,
Phonics

Phonics

I am an elementary teacher who has taught students to read using a combination of phonics and sight words. I teach spelling skills with phonics skills.
Reading

Reading

I am an elementary school teacher that has worked with reading students between second and sixth grade.
Social Studies

Social Studies

I have experience with elementary and middle school level social studies instruction and tutoring. I am able to help with geography, and US and world history topics.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I have worked with special needs students both as a teacher and a camp counselor. My experience has included students with both learning disabilities and emotional/behavioral disabilities. When I tutor special needs students, I tailor their curriculum to their learning styles and target the gaps in previous learning that are currently affecting academic progress.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have a history of working with students in order to help them get the most out of what they are studying. I used whatever resources best work for that child: binder/folder organization, work boxes, visual organizers for content area information, outlines, notecards, etc. I also work with students on the skills needed to use such organizers such as scanning/skimming, dictionary skills, and research skills (both online and paper based).
