About Katherine

I have a degree in English from LSU Shreveport. I have been teaching Middle and High school since January 2007. I take my students' learning personally, and do everything I can to guide their success. I've been told I'm strong in Test Prep, but really I'm just teaching skills and how to best apply them. My greatest joy comes from the "Got it" moments.

I try to find real life applications for the skills I teach so that my students recognize value in their learning.

Please feel free to contact me if you need help. I have a flexible schedule.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I taught high school for 5 years and worked on ACT prep with many of my students.

ASVAB

I have tutored students for tests of every kind over the years. With standardized testing, I focus not only on the content, but on the strategies and skills needed to pass the tests.

Common Core

I have been a classroom teacher since January 2007. I have had extensive training in common core and am familiar with how the standards are scaffolded. My lessons often take deficiencies into consideration and build accordingly.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently teach grades 6-8. I have been tutoring for 20+ years and have a good deal of experience with upper elementary and middle school. My specialty is reading and ELA but I have some experience with all areas.

English

I'm qualified to teach English based on my Bachelor's Degree as well as my many years teaching English in the classroom. I stay current with new requirements, standards, and strategies through my own research, as well as professional development.

Grammar

I take a very traditional approach with grammar - introduce, model, guided practice and independent practice. The key word is practice. I align my grammar lessons with Common Core standards. I try to develop engaging lessons so my students truly develop the grammar skills required for academic success.

Handwriting

I use hands on activities and repetition to work with my own students' handwriting. I work one on one with my own children and those I tutor in order to identify and address difficulties they encounter.

Homeschool

I have worked with homeschooled students at all grade levels in my years of tutoring. These students have come to me with a wide variety of needs and requirements, giving me a broad base of experience. While I specialize in ELA, I have experience tutoring all subjects. I feel this will help me in tutoring homeschooled clients.

Literature

I have a Bachelor's degree in English. I've been a classroom teacher since January 2007 and an ELA tutor since 1994.

Phonics

I have been trained in the LANGUAGE! program, which focuses heavily on phonics and decoding. I taught this as a Response to Intervention for one school year and saw great success. I teach some phonics and use these strategies now even in my 8th grade reading classes now.

Praxis

After being out of school several years, I made high scores on my own Praxis exams. I believe this is entirely due to excellent test preparation strategies and study skills. In the classroom and with my tutoring clients, I teach strategies that work in preparing for any standardized test. After that, we focus on content specific strategies.

Proofreading

Proofreading is a skill that I have taught my students since entering the classroom. I use a variety of materials to build my students' proofreading skills, which strengthens their own writing.

QuickBooks

My husband started his own business as a contractor over a decade ago. For accounting, billing, etc., he has always used QuickBooks. I taught myself QuickBooks in order to help with his business and am very proficient. I feel confident in teaching others how to utilize this program.

Reading

I am Secondary ELA Certified for Louisiana and trained in several ELA RTI strategies.

Spelling

I've been a classroom teacher since January 2007 and an ELA tutor since 1994. Spelling is one of my strengths both as a student and as a teacher. I use engaging lessons to teach spelling rules, along with traditional strategies, such as memorization and repetition.

Study Skills

As an ELA teacher at the secondary level, I often find my students struggle because of deficient study skills. I use a variety of strategies to help my students strengthen these skills as well as build confidence. I work with them on time management, organization, note-taking as well as reading strategies.

Vocabulary

I have a Bachelor's degree in English. When building vocabulary, I use a variety of strategies, including teaching context clues, bases and affixes, as well as dictionary skills.

Writing

When teaching writing, I begin by teaching my students how to determine what is required by the assignment. I use hands on activities to teach the writing process. I show my students how to break assignments into manageable chunks, so they are less intimidated.
