I specialize in teaching English to adults, mainly to non-native English learners.

ESL/ESOL

I myself have studied several foreign languages throughout my academic career. Doing so has given me useful insight into the most effective methods of learning and teaching a second language. I have also had the opportunity to live in a foreign country (Japan), so I am quite aware of all the challenges that come with trying to communicate on a daily basis in a language different than your own. While in Japan, I taught English to Japanese students of various ages. Through this experience I was able to understand the unique difficulties of learning English from a Japanese perspective. When teaching English to a non-native speaker, I try to remain aware of my student’s linguistic background. This helps me recognize specific areas where a student might have difficulty expressing his/her thoughts in English. I believe having this sort of sensitivity makes me an effective ESL teacher.

Japanese

I love teaching Japanese! I specialize in teaching beginner and low-intermediate levels, focusing on speaking and listening as well as reading and writing. If you've always wanted to learn Japanese, I encourage you to give it a try - and I'd be more than happy to teach you!

Reading

I specialize in Adult Reading & Writing, for both native and non-native English speakers. I teach all levels, from absolute beginners to more advanced readers. I believe you are never too old to learn to read, and I would be honored to help you become a confident reader!
