Southern CT State University (Elementary Education and Sociology)
My name is Wendy. I'm a 38 year old former teacher. I graduated from Southern CT State University with a BA in Elementary Education, and a BS in Sociology. I substitute taught in a variety of classrooms with age groups from Pre-K to 6th as well as special needs classes, before deciding what I wanted to teach. I then taught kindergarten 2 years and first grade 4 years. I have been a certified teacher in both CT and TX.
A few years ago, we moved from TX to GA, where I decided to take a break from teaching and work for myself at a home-based business... I loved it, but I missed teaching SO much that when we moved back to CT, I began tutoring and loved it! I'm just tickled to have come across this website which provides an easy way for people like me, with a passion for teaching, to connect with people like you, who want or need some one-on-one attention!
I'm back in GA and love working with my students again! I am happy to work with students of any age in my areas of expertise- I once taught reading to a 56 year old! I hope that you will find my teaching style just what you or your child needs!
Feel free to email me with any questions you might have!
~Wendy Hello there!

My son has been working with Wendy for about six months now, and we are beyond pleased with his progress and confidence in school. Wendy is extremely patient, and as my son has said she makes work "challenging" but fun at the same time. Wendy is always approachable and easy to talk with, offering her advice and ideas while truly listening to our thoughts and concerns. My son enjoys working with Wendy on a weekly basis. We have truly been impressed by her love for teaching, the overall concern and interest she has in my son, and energy she brings to all of her lessons!
Wendy is an awesome tutor. She turned my daughter's sour mood in regards to learning into a very happy and enjoyable experience! My daughter is growing in confidence every day thanks to Wendy's encouragement, hands on approach, and every day application. She works closely with her teachers to make sure they are on task with the class. We are so glad to have found her!
Wendy was great with my daughter, she gave suggestions to help with fine motor skills and handwriting, and the suggestions have helped my daughter with her handwriting.
Wendy has been working with my child now for about 5 weeks and we have definitely noticed a big improvement! We are very impressed with her organization, patience and communication. Throughout my child's education, we have really struggled with teacher communication making it difficult to assist our child at home, but Wendy has made sure that we always know what's going on in the lessons and what we should do at home to assist. She is easy to work with and always there to answer questions. My child really enjoys lesson time with Wendy, which makes it much easier to learn. We feel very fortunate to have found such a great tutor and will definitely continue our lessons going forward and recommend Wendy to anyone needing a tutor.
Ms. Wendy tutored my first-grader in all subject areas. She made the learning fun for him, and he actually looked forward to going. She is an experienced classroom teacher and has plenty of resources to vary the lessons and keep them interesting. I'm so thankful we found her!
Wendy has excellent teaching skills. My son has improved his grade's in math and reading. I highly recommend her and look forward having her work with my son in the future.
Wendy asked all the right questions in advance of meeting my granddaughter and was prompt and well prepared when she arrived to tutor her in reading and writing. She had a good rapport with my grand child and I felt after the first session that they could develop a good working relationship.
I highly recommend Wendy as a tutor!
Wendy is an excellent tutor, she's very dedicated to my daughter. With just four sessions We are seeing significant improvement in her grades and she feels more confident. Wendy is doing a great job and I'm very happy to see my daughter improving in math.
I am very impressed with the feedback I received from Wendy. I am not present at my son's tutoring sessions so I rely on the feedback form to let me know what they covered. I was impressed with the variety of material Wendy was able to cover in the hour and the feedback form she developed to put in his backpack. The feedback she provided via Wysant further detailed the lesson. Her communication skills are excellent in terms of keeping me informed and providing detailed info. Additionally since his first lesson with Wendy I have already seen my son's attitude about reading change for the better. He is taking more joy in reading and more pride in his ability. This is a great relief given that motivation is such a key factor in success and is much more difficult, in my opinion, to improve. You can teach skill based lessons but a tutor who can improve motivation has a rare gift. Particularly since my son had convinced his classroom teacher that his skill level was much lower than it actually is due to a desire to avoid learning to read. Now he is starting to desire to be a good reader. I can't express what a change this is from prior to starting with Wendy. I look forward to continuing to see such improvement.
I could not have dreamed up a more perfect tutor for my 10 yr old son. She has just the right balance of focus and fun to keep him interested and laughing. Besides her advanced teaching skills, she also has the patience, understanding and sense of humor needed to work with special needs children. One of her greatest strengths is her capability to quickly pinpoint the exact areas a child needs help with the most and develop an individual teaching plan that incorporates all those areas into each lesson. She leaves very detailed notes after each lesson on what she covered. I’m always impressed by how detailed and organized she is. As a full time working mom, another huge plus is that she is extremely flexible. For example, if my son needs extra help for a spelling test she will incorporate that into her lesson that week. One of his problem areas is with writing prompts. He is expected to write several paragraphs on a given topic with a beginning, middle and conclusion with added details. This has been very difficult for him. She had us go to the library and get books out on a topic of interest to him. They did research on the Internet. She used a story web to help him organize topic ideas and thoughts on paper before he typed the report in Word which turned out great. I went to my parent-teacher conference last week and his classroom and special ed teacher were amazed at a recent writing prompt he did at school. They said it was the best he had ever done. I knew it was because of Wendy. We could not be more happy that she is in our lives.
Wendy is a tutor that certainly goes above and beyond the call of duty. She brought my fears comfort when she began working with my son, as he has excelled since. This was my first time using Wyzant and it was a perfect match. I don't think there could have been a more better match for my son. He calls her his secret weapon. I highly recommend Wendy and we are truly grateful for meeting her.
Thanks so much.
Wendy, it was a pleasure to meet you on Tuesday Sept. 4, 2012. Even though this was my grandson first lesson he really enjoyed your teaching ability and he felt very comfortable with you. You have great patience and I can see you really enjoyed teaching. I have been through several tutors because of my other two grand kids and I must say you are the best I have met. My grandson asked me can you tutor him 30 days a month after school that is how much he enjoyed you teaching him. He was so proud of the sentence he did.
We all look forward to seeing you next week.
I initially just wanted a tutor to come in and help my incoming 3rd grader, who scoffs at anything difficult to her, catch up with her math and maybe get a head start on the year. In the month or so since Wendy has come, I have noticed a definite improvement in my child's math skills. She has learned to slow down, take her time, and really think about why she is doing what she is doing. Wendy was able to teach her what I couldn't - the reason behind the skills. I would recommend her to anyone, especially to children who need extra individualized attention in order to succeed.
Wendy is an Excellent tutor. She is very patient and extremely sweet. We are very happy with the progress our child is making with Wendy as her tutor.
Wendy is an amazing tutor. I can't begin to express what a positive influence she has on my six year old son and his reading skills. Wendy started working with my son a little over a month ago and in such a short time I have seen such a big difference. Christian has become more confident in his reading abilities and now enjoys to read. Wendy has taught Christian wonderful strategies to use when reading and decoding words. I would recommend Wendy to any child as a tutor. She has been a blessing.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I Graduated in 2001 with a BA in Elementary Education and was Certified in CT until May 2011. I have a current TX teaching Certificate. I taught both in CT and in TX
I love teaching math to young children. I believe it is very important to be sure that the foundation is VERY strong before moving on. As I have told my students in the past, "if we build a skyscraper on a foundation made of sand, the higher we build, the more opportunities for it wobble and fall over. We want to make sure our foundation is built strong!" Moving on before previous skills are mastered will make new skills difficult to learn.
I also like to work with problem solving beginning as early as kindergarten- problem solving strategies teach critical thinking skills that can be utilized in many areas of life! :)
I graduated from Southern CT State University with a BA in Elementary Education, and a BS in Sociology. Many children struggle with different aspects of learning to read. Phonics is one such aspect that can cause problems with reading, speaking, and spelling.
Phonics is the basic instruction that teaches the relationships between letters and sounds. It involves learning how to connect the sounds of spoken English with letters or groups of letters that create sounds. Phonics teaches us to use these relationships to speak, read, and write words.
There are a variety of skills to tackle when teaching phonics, from individual letter sounds, blends, dipthongs, consonants and vowels, and not to mention, "the rules" and exceptions. It's a lot to learn, but it can also be fun! I truly enjoy these lessons, because phonics give us a good foundation for other learning!
Reading is one of the most important gifts we can give children. Reading affects everything we do from crossing a street safely, ordering at restaurant, to keeping up with current events, communicating with others, and even enjoyment. We read everywhere we go with almost everything we do.
Work with phonics, fluency, high frequency words, comprehension, writing, and even confidence are major factors when teaching a reader. There are a variety of skill-sets for developing reading, and I look forward to helping you or your child find success in this very important life skill!
I love teaching students communicate through writing! There are so many ways to express yourself in this medium. When teaching writing, I use the CCP model (Consume/Critique/Produce ). It's a very effective plan that has found my students much success, both in a classroom and one-to-one tutoring! Becoming better writers often creates a better reader as well... who can argue with a reward like that?
