Bio

I have been teaching English and writing for over 20 years, both in public high schools and at the university level. I have taught A.P. Literature, creative writing, film studies, speech, and drama. Additionally, I have run many in-person and online writing workshops for writers of all ages, working with teams and individuals alike.

I have been teaching English and writing for over 20 years, both in public high schools and at the university level. I have taught A.P. Literature, creative writing, film studies, speech, and drama. Additionally, I have run many in-person and online writing workshops for writers of all ages, working with teams and individuals alike.

My students love my enthusiasm for the written word as well as my creativity in taking them from where they are to where they are capable of going. I love seeing students take big risks in writing and interpreting literature, and I wholeheartedly believe in the statement by education specialist Sir Ken Robinson: "If you're not prepared to be wrong, you'll never come up with anything original."

Because I am a writer myself with over 20 published short stories, I approach tutoring as a "doer" and a teacher, ignoring that ignorant adage, "Those who can do, those who can do, teach." My road to success as a writer has taught me that all great writing begins with terrible first efforts and that the process of interpreting literature, writing essays, and even understanding grammar should be a cooperative team effort.

As an A.P. Literature teacher and College Board essay reader/scorer, I have experienced every level of young scholar and have learned to differentiate and stair-step instruction. My students have commented on my ability to teach to the student, not to the test.
As a professional actor, both stage and screen, and as the 2009 Kentucky Speech Coach of the Year, I can promise my instruction on public speaking is based in experience--and a lot of it.

If you need a kind, patient, funny (so many dad jokes), experienced professional to help you succeed, look no further. I promise to make each student's success my priority during our tutoring sessions. My daughter wanted me to add that I probably shouldn't help you in math though.

Film,

Film

Not only have I taught introduction to film classes for high school students, I have been a working actor for several years. I have expertise in film history, genres, production, and criticism.
Theater

Theater

Having acted since I was a child, I have many years of experience on stage, working in a variety of roles. However, I also have training in stagecraft and have built sets on many stages, large and small.

Business

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Over the years, I led many students to the national level in speech competitions. I have also been a trainer for other professionals, presenting and national conferences to a variety of audiences. Finally, as a professional actor, I have a large toolbox of techniques for success in public speaking.

Corporate Training

Grammar,

Grammar

I am not embarrassed to admit that one of my favorite classes in college was Advanced Grammar. I love how sentences are developed to enhance tone, mood, and voice. I can spot a comma splice or a run-on faster than you can say...well, comma splice or run-on. I know my parts of speech better than my children's names. Plus, I've never met a semi-colon I didn't like.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

If any of my colleagues need an essay, letter, poem, or story proofread, they come to me. I have been hired as an independent contractor to proofread fiction and non-fiction works. I have also graded more writing than I would care to admit. So many pages of student essays. So many.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

In addition to having taught English since 2002, I have taught many classes and workshops to help students prepare for the ACT; this includes several sessions on vocabulary development. As a writer, I value not simply "smart" words, but the correct words for the mood and tone of a writing selection. I can help students break down difficult words to not simply get the right answer but to increase their written and spoken vocabulary.

English

English,

English

I have taught English to students from 8th grade to college in a variety of settings, including alternative schools, after-school tutoring, online, and large groups. Several teaching awards have adorned my classroom walls over the years including two District Teacher of the Year awards. I am considered a highly-qualified instructor.

Literature

In addition to having taught A.P. Literature for many years, I have been a reader for the A.P. exam, a trainer for A.P. instructors, and a grant-recipient for improved scores on the exam. In short, I know very well how to help students analyze literature and not just regurgitate what the teacher or textbook has said.
