I’m Maria! I graduated with a 4.0 GPA from the International Academy and was valedictorian. I am now studying astrophysics at the University of California, Berkeley. Through my time as a director of a non-profit helping expand access to STEM education and as captain of a science competition team, I’ve found that working with students to help them succeed can be incredibly rewarding. I love helping others overcome challenges and accomplish their goals. As a student myself, I’ve seen the difference that a good teacher can make. My favorite classes have always been the ones where it is clear that the professor is incredibly passionate about the subjects and made the class engaging for everyone. It is this attitude that I bring to my tutoring sessions. I do everything I can to make sessions interesting and informative and ensure that all students are left feeling more confident.
The structure of sessions varies slightly depending on what students need help with. However, generally I like to start by introducing the topic, then doing some guided examples, and finally having the student try to work through problems on their own. I also like to use alternation, where I have the student teach me the topic to test their understanding and identify areas of confusion.
I have 1 year of tutoring experience in Spanish, through volunteering with my school’s chapter of the Spanish Honor Society. I helped individual students with grammar and longer writing assignments. I also have several years of experience freelance tutoring in STEM, English, SAT prep, and college admissions. I specialize in Mathematics, English, Literature, Astronomy, Physics, Biology, SAT preparation, and college applications.
I want to ensure that students get the most benefit out of these sessions as possible, so I always welcome any feedback, suggestions, or resources that students or parents can provide. I am easy to get in contact with and will respond quickly to any messages. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!
