Bio

Hello students and parents!

My name is Anabel, and I'm an honors student at UC Berkeley with a 4.0 GPA, majoring in Molecular & Cell Biology and minoring in Music. This continues a record of achievement from high school, where I was an AP Scholar with Honor and a Dean's List student. My tutoring philosophy is shaped by my own academic journey; while I'm proud of my achievements, I know firsthand what it's like to struggle.

After barely passing my first two midterms at Berkeley, I developed new strategies to overcome my difficulties with test-taking and ended my first year with honors. My experiences have made me a uniquely empathetic and effective tutor, and I'm extremely passionate about guiding students through their own academic hurdles.

I have a versatile range of teaching and mentoring experiences. As a volunteer for the non-profit Learn To Be, I've created personalized lesson plans for K-12 students in Math, Science, and English. My work as a research assistant at Stanford Medicine allows me to bring real-world context to complex Biology and Chemistry topics. In the arts, my role as Student Conductor for a 60+ person choir was a masterclass in teaching, guiding students of all skill levels through complex music. This, combined with my work as a bilingual (English/Russian) interpreter, has given me a unique toolkit for teaching communication and the arts.

My goal is to break down intimidating problems into manageable steps and to make learning a joyful process. I'm determined to empower students with the confidence and life-long skills to take on any challenge. Whether we're navigating a difficult subject or exploring a new one, I'm here to provide a supportive and engaging environment. I welcome any resources or suggestions parents can provide. I'm easy to reach and provide prompt responses.

Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to helping you achieve your academic goals. Please feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson!

Chemistry

Chemistry

As a Molecular & Cell Biology major on the Pre-med track at UC Berkeley, I have a rigorous and current understanding of chemistry, from foundational principles to complex biochemical applications. I have applied this knowledge through extensive hands-on research at institutions like Stanford Medicine, where my work included preparing lab solutions and analyzing biochemical pathways. This background allows me to make abstract concepts tangible, connecting textbook material to its real-world applications in biology and medicine. I am passionate about demystifying this subject for student and helping them build the confidence and strong conceptual foundation need for success/
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have extensive experience tutoring elementary and middle school students in mathematics, including creating and presenting personalized lesson plans for K-12 learners through the non-profit Learn To Be. My approach is informed by my studies in child development and psychology, allowing me to create a patient, empathetic, and engaging learning environment for students of all ages. In addition to formal tutoring, my work as a children's caregiver has given me years of experience connecting with and mentoring young learners from diverse backgrounds. My primary goal is to make math fun and intuitive, helping young students build a strong foundational understanding and the confidence to succeed.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

As a Molecular and Cell Biology major at UC Berkeley, I have a deep passion for science that I love sharing with young learners. I have experience creating personalized lesson plans and tutoring K-12 students in science through the non-profit Learn To Be, focusing on making complex topics accessible and fun. My goal is to spark a student's natural curiosity, encouraging them to ask questions and explore the world around them through engaging, hands-on activities. My own experience in research labs helps me show students that science is a living process of discovery, not just a subject in a textbook.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

As a bilingual native speaker of both English and Russian, I have a deep, personal understanding of the challenges and rewards of learning a new language. I have direct experience tutoring ESL students through the non-profit Learn To Be, in addition to my work as a volunteer language interpreter for the non-profit Tarjimly, which has given me extensive practice in facilitating clear communication for non-native speakers in real-world settings. This background allows me to be a patient and effective tutor, helping students navigate everything from grammar and pronunciation to conversational fluency. My goal is to build my students' confidence and empower them with the practical English skills they need to succeed.
Geography

Geography

While not my university major, geography has been my deepest academic passion since I was a child, leading me to master a wide range of world knowledge. I can confidently identify every country and US state on a map, and I have dedicated years to learning every national flag and capital city. My enthusiasm for the subject is contagious, and I use it to make learning about maps, cultures, and places an exciting adventure rather than a chore. My goal is to help students build a strong mental map of the world, sparking a genuine curiosity that will last a lifetime.
Music Theory

Music Theory

My foundation in Music Theory was built over five years as a member of the San Francisco Girls Chorus and was later formalized through my Vocal Arts diploma from the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts. I applied this expertise as Student Conductor for a 60-person choir, where I was responsible for teaching complex choral pieces with multiple voice parts to students of all skill levels, breaking down harmony into understandable concepts. I translate this deep practical and theoretical knowledge to my one-on-one lessons, helping K-12 students build a strong foundational understanding of music. My goal is to make theory approachable, empowering students to creatively and confidently engage with music.
