A Few reading Tutor Qualifications
My post-certification in both Florida & Georgia is in Special Ed Consultative, which means I've worked predominantly with SpEd students who are mainstreamed into the classroom. These are children who generally have ADD, ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, etc. --not students who have severe or profound disabilities. I have also assisted and taught Reading and phonics in elementary through high school levels and have tutored with Wyzant for over 7 years. I am currently retired from teaching in public schools.

I am an experienced Special Education teacher and gain great satisfaction in bringing my students up to grade level expectations. I have experience both in working in a resource room and in a regular classroom. I use phonics and whole language to teach reading. I use phonics to teach the beginning stages of reading and it also helps in writing. With the use of whole language I find the use of pictures helps in the understanding of the words and the story. With older students I also use phonics to teach new words and use story telling to help with understanding and with writing.

I have tutored 200+ students. I work with students to help them understand character development, themes, and symbols within literature and other academic texts. I hope to share some of the tips and tricks I have learned from being a student and from tutoring to help students gain confidence.

Reading requires the reader's ability to construct the meaning of a text through the systematic processing of the written text in time. There are seven principles which readers must master to re-construct the writer's meaning in writing the text. This course will introduce the student to these 7 STANDARDS by which language TEXTS are constructed by a writer and understood by a reader. These STANDARDS are:1. Cohesion; 2. Coherence; 3. Intentionality; 4. Acceptability; 5. Informativity; 6. Situationality; and 7. Intertextuality.Informing the student of these standards and providing guided practical exercise will provide the student with a strong competence in professions such as journalism, the law, as well as competence to participate in public discourse in the mass media.
