About Steven

I recently retired from teaching after 15 wonderful years in the Clark County School District. My passion for teaching students is still as strong as the first day I walked into the classroom. I taught 4th grade for the first 2 years of my career and then taught 13 years of 3rd grade. I considered myself to be very professional, responsible, and a man with integrity who always put the individual needs of his students first. I continually modeled my joy for learning and fostered relationships between all classmates to use our individual differences as strengths. I feel strongly about developing a great rapport with every student and taking an interest in their life.

My experience comes mostly in Elementary school subjects and my favorite subject to teach is Math. I love the challenge of taking a new student and observing the way they learn, so I can use the best methods to teach them. I love playing with numbers and my enthusiasm will spread to my students. It is so satisfying when you see the hard work pay off and the "lightbulb" goes on in their head. Writing is another area I love to teach creative skills. Of course, I love to teach reading comprehension and fluency. I consider myself to be an expert in using higher level learning skills like inferencing and proven questioning strategies to dig deeply into the meaning of a book.
Map reading and Geography are more of my passions and I'd certainly love to teach some American History!
Also, If you are an adult , I have a TESL DEGREEand can help you immensely with your everyday English conversational skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've taught all subjects in a 3rd, 4th, and 5th, grade classroom setting. I can also differentiate my instruction to the individual needs of my students. For the last several years of my career I always volunteered to teach the special needs students in a regular classroom setting.

Elementary Math

I've taught Math at 2nd-5th grade level for 15 years. I model my own excitement for Math and feel I can get any student engaged because I can adjust my teaching style and methods to the needs of each particular student. I understand the curriculum at each grade level extremely well and have test preps my students for years using the new standards. I feel strongly that I can bond with any student and help them to master all the math standards work vigorous work!

ESL/ESOL

I taught second language students my whole career. I have a double TESlL and my masters degree concentration area was Multicultural Education.

Geography

I have a great background in building my knowledge of Geography. I have extensively traveled across the regions of this country by car ans flown too many parts of Asia. All my life been addicted to reading all kinds of maps, love studying about landforms, reasons for differences in climates, and political boundaries. As a 3rd and 4th grade teacher, I had the pleasure of using my master skills to get my students excited about working on maps and learning how different acts of nature effect the various parts of the earth and it's landforms.

Reading

I have taught reading at all Elementary levels and have an extensive backgrounds in using many strategies to improve reading comprehension and fluency in various genres. I feel it is very important to get to know your student's interests and choose material the will help them develop a joy for reading. Using background knowledge and good vocabulary development is vital!
Higher thinking strategies like inferencing, characters motivations, cause and effect, and using thinking maps to organize thoughts are some ways I use to improve comprehension.

Study Skills

I have fifteen years of teaching and testing experience.
I had tutored several children to review and prepare them for tests. During my teaching career I have used many strategies and methods to find students' styles of learning and studying for many different kinds of change. Studying must be differentiated to give each student their best chance for success.

Vocabulary

Through my extensive teaching of vocabulary. I've learned that it's very important to connect new words to prior knowledge. Using the new word in reading selections and during writing time is a major plus. Discussing the new words and personalizing them into new assignments will tend to improve mastery.

Awesome teacher

Steven is a wonderful tutor who is extremely patient as well as knowledgeable. I hired him to help my some improve his math skills as he was struggling with a few concepts. Steven was able to get those concepts across in a short order and now my son is doing so much better with his multiplication and division skills.
