About
Henry: |
Expertise: Math, GRE, SAT, WASL, and all English language skills...
I've had great success with students preparing for the GRE and SAT. My math students say they were helped by my ability to EXPLAIN the concepts in a way they could understand. In addition, I've just about done it all when it comes to teaching English language skills...writing, literature, editing, newspaper, test preparation, public speaking. My vocabulary method can't be beat! I've taught students from 7th grade through college. Now, I want to give my attention to only one student at a time. |

Henry's Experience:
elementary (k-6th)
|
My Washington state teaching certificate is for K-12 language arts, and I have always connected well with my elementary-age nieces. In addition to my years of teaching English, I scored above 700 on both the SAT and GRE math portions. I live is an eclectic one. My work as a journalist and journalism teacher has made required me (though I find it a joy) to be at least conversant in all subjects. I love working with elementary students who need help in math, reading, writing, or social studies.

grammar
|
I have taught writing, literature, and newspaper journalism (including editing) for 30 years and have worked professionally as a reporter and desk editor. At the high school where I most recently taught, I was designated the "Grammar Guardian," the one to whom faculty members went when there was a grammatical question or dispute.

GRE
|
The so-called "Grand Reduction of Ego" (GRE) is a real intimidator. I managed above 700 scores on both the language and math portions, without undue stress. I also earned a 90+ score in the Miller Analogy exam. My test preparation philosophy includes both practice with the material and emotional preparation for the event. I have been a successful grad student at Portland State University, the University of Portland, and the University of Washington and know what is required to handle challenging material.

proofreading
|
I have assisted high school and college students in proofreading both school assignments and newspaper stories for approximately 30 years. In addition to teaching regular English classes, I have advised both high school and college newspapers. I have also worked as a newspaper editor-in-chief and desk editor. My free-lance work has included editing a doctoral dissertation.
