About Ann

A Professor of International Cambridge English Language and Literature, International Baccalaureate English Literature, English B (ESL), Text in Performance and Theory of Knowledge, an IB Examiner for the Extended Essay and Commentary, a Creative Writing teacher and a published scholar and poet, I invite learners into the world of discovery learning and learning how to learn. They learn to be closer readers of themselves, literature and other people. Given the American poet, Emily Dickinson’s comparison between a frigate and a book, my students also travel. They explore both inner and outer landscapes as they engage in a great variety of cultural and historical contexts for creative works. They also engage in a variety of suitable formative tasks based on their interests and summative task goals. Learning how to learn, they realize how revision is vital to improved creative and critical thinking. My Young Authors Program (ages 5-10) was highly appealing. Writers collaborated to compose a play performed by First Stage in Los Angeles. This year was my tenth with the Oregon Writing Festival at PSU where I offer creative writing workshops for middle school writers.

An outstanding tutor, I bring my love of language, literature and composition, my love of learning and my appreciation of students and their ways to enjoy learning. I study my students, learn their keys to learning, their strengths and their weaknesses. From my graduate study in Education, I bring understanding of Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences that I apply to creating formative and differentiated tasks so vital to engaging students’ centers of control for learning and summative task performance. I bring understanding of creativity and how to evaluate it as developed by Paul Torrence and and Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi, I bring an understanding of Kazimierz Dabrowski and Michael Piekowski’s research, studying how literature engages multilevel inner growth toward the personality ideal. I apply their research, as well as Bloom’s Taxonomy of Cognitive Development to form shared inquiry questions that move from answers to questioning answers, always to engage self-questioning, self-evaluation and meta-cognitive “how do you know that you know” development. These teaching arts result in student focus, participation in their learning, development of centers of control for learning, enjoyment of learning and challenges, improved critical and creative thinking, all resulting in their holistic growth, academic improvement and better marks. In addition, I bring doctoral work in the study of literature through performance in cultural and historical contexts. Students who enjoy research-based learning enjoy working with me.

Join my happy students whose love of learning has taken them on adventurous and creative journeys to high ranking universities and beyond. Contact me with your questions and to schedule lessons.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

My B.A. in English Literature and Linguistics serves my tutoring capabilities, as I understand how language affects perception. For ten years, I have either tutored or taught EFL,ESL students of all ages and learning levels. My M.A. in Education for Gifted, Creative Learners with a focus on differentiated curriculum serves my ability to create lessons based on students' multiple intelligences (Howard Gardner's theory), Bloom's Taxonomy of Cognitive Development and Torrence's practices for developing creativity.

Literature

My M.A. in Dramatic Literature and Ph.D. in the Study of Literature through Performance in Cultural and Historical Contexts introduced me to theories of organic unity and how literary and dramatic arts serve students' personal and interpersonal growth. A professor of International Baccalaureate Diploma Program English A Literature and English B (ESL) Literature for over nine years, I witness how many bright students enjoy developing their imaginations as well as synthesizing their creative and critical thinking skills through my guided study of literature. They also enjoy their high marks. An IB English A Examiner for the Extended Essay and Paper 1 Commentary, I set high standards and show each person how to meet them through key revision practices.

Proofreading

A published scholar and poet, I have improved my proofreading practices of not only my own work, but that of others. These experiences have taught me how difficult it is to proofread one's own work due to our selective visions. At first we see what we believe we have written rather than what is actually on the page. I also teach some editing techniques for making a text more precise and concise.

Reading

Reading is an art and a performance that develops our imaginations as our creative and critical lenses improve. Through shared inquiry and experiential approaches, I have taught EFL reading and writing for primary students and critical reading for ESL and Native English speakers at secondary and tertiary levels. All of my students have enjoyed reading more and more as they enjoyed the discovery learning that helped them to develop their imaginations as well as creative and critical thinking skills.

Writing

My career as a writing teacher began with the invitation to offer a Young Authors Program for elementary ages 7-10, an invitation that I accepted and found very rewarding for both writers and me. My career continued with many invitations to offer Middle School creative writing workshops with the Oregon Writing Festival, invitations which I gratefully accepted. My university undergraduates and IB students benefit from my teaching of the following courses: Interpreting Literature and Writing Commentary, Rhetoric and Writing Good Argument, and Research and Writing. I am a published scholar and poet, the details of which can be found in my C.V.

Extremely knowledgable and professional

Ann has taught my son only the lesson and quickly she already found the pattern of his learning style and kept him focus for one whole hour! She outlined the plan for improving his reading and writing based on his strengths. The encouragement on his imagination is impressive!
