My successes in school and my years of work experiences prepared me to excel as a tutor.
In high school, two out of three years, I ranked in the top three on the national math test.
While in college I did extremely well in subjects in which attention to detail was critical. In addition to repeatedly receiving a 4.0 in anything math related, I usually got the highest test score in the class.
In the workplace, I was promoted to Service Manager and given many workers to train. I discovered that each person had a different way of learning. If I did not get the desired result from one of them, I first considered the teaching approach I used with them to see if it could be improved.
When I returned to college to study Computing and Software Systems, I observed that most instructors either did not have the time or the desire to adapt to the students’ needs. I enrolled in a tutor training course and worked in a lab helping my classmates in many subjects. As a tutor, I am able to provide what the instructor cannot.
I am patient and understanding, but also thorough and detail oriented. Rather than just showing the students a correct way to perform an operation, I prefer to ask the right questions that will help the student think of a way to find it.
I like seeing people reach their potential--and, if I am able in some way to help them in getting there, I find that especially fulfilling.
As part of the requirements of the University of Washington's Computing and Software Systems bachelor's degree, I completed four C++ courses and then used the programing experience to complete many projects for other courses.
Additionally, I took a college course on tutoring techniques and later was paid to tutor and/or monitor various computer labs.
I did very well in all of the C++ classes and was able to help others because of my training.
I have been a student in the computing and software systems bachelor's degree program at the Bothell, WA, campus of the University of Washington. In fact, I have finished all of the required classes except the 400-hour internship, for which I am currently searching.
Studies for this program included computer science, computer hardware, system analysis & design, and a lot of software development--mostly using C++.
I also took a college course on tutoring techniques and later was paid to tutor and/or monitor various computer labs.
