I am a native Japanese speaker. I came from Japan to US 12 years ago and I have been teaching/tutoring Japanese to children and adults for about 7 years. Currently, I teach at two language schools, a preschool and an elementary school as after school program language instructor. When I teach Japanese to young children, I try to speak to them in Japanese as much as possible. I use gestures and repeat the same words and expressions many times. For older children and adults, I use some English when they have difficulty in understanding or when I explain grammatical rules etc, but still I try to communicate in Japanese.
I am able to teach Russian language, too. Before I came to US, I taught Russian at universities in Japan for 3 years. I am good at teaching Russian to beginners, since I learned Russian as a foreign language, and I can explain grammatical rules in a systematic way. My major in Kyoto University Graduate School, from which I received a Ph.D in 2005, was Russian language study. My Russian speaking skill is as good as reading and writing skill, since I studied in Russia for one year when I was a student and I keep practicing speaking Russian since then. Actually, I speak Russian every day at home as well as Japanese.

Yuko understood exactly what I was looking for in a lesson. She led the conversation and corrected my grammar and vocabulary gently but clearly. Highly recommended.
Thank you, Matthew, for for giving me a perfect rating and for recommending my service to other students. I am looking forward to seeing you tomorrow for another lesson.
Yuko understood my goals and quickly assessed my previous exposure to the language, and she was able to tailor the lessons to my needs. She is a patient and helpful teacher with a strong background in language instruction, and she understands what tends to be challenging for students. We used a textbook as a source of exercises, but Yuko integrated these into a conversational lesson and added material where she thought it would be useful for me. She was also flexible in regard to scheduling our meetings. I strongly recommend her as a tutor!
Thank you, Jeremy! I am so glad to hear that you liked my lessons. I enjoyed working with you a lot, as well. Have a great time in Japan!
My goals were to improve my Japanese pronunciation and my listening and speaking skills. We discussed my goals and set up a plan to achieve them. I was very pleased with the tutoring session.
Thank you, David, for finding time to write a review for our firs lesson. I am glad to hear that you liked it. I will be looking forward to meeting you on Thursday for the second lesson.
Yuko was fun and down to earth tudor. She was personable and kind. She determined my level and focused on strengthening my Russian foundation. She was especially good at distinguishing the subtle differences in the sound of words and syllables. Thank you Yuko!
Thank you Donal! I will be looking forward to hearing back from you and having the second lesson with you.
We started having our son meet with Yuko weekly to speak Japanese a few years ago when his high school was unable to fit the appropriate Japanese class into his schedule. For two years, Aaron met every other week or so with Yuko, working on keeping his Japanese up to speed. This year, he jumped into the class he was supposed to be in two years ago and is heads and shoulders above the students who have been taking Japanese uninterrupted for the last few years.
Yuko is patient, flexible, and incredibly conscientious. I cannot recommend her enough as a Japanese tutor.
Thank you, Denise, for your wonderful feedback. I enjoyed tutoring Japanese to your son a lot for the last few years. I wish him continued success in the future.
Yuko is a great tutor/teacher! Even with only one session we fixed so many little mistakes with spelling and grammar and I'm already feeling super confident! I look forward to many sessions in the future!
I am so happy to read your feedback. Thank you very much! I really like to help a motivated student like you. I look forward to see how your Japanese will be getting better.
Thank you Yuko, this was a great lesson and showed me that I need to review lessons 1 - 4 thoroughly and we can practice ?????? next time!
Thank you for your time to post a feedback. I am glad to hear that you liked the last lesson. I am looking forward to seeing you soon for another lesson!
I'm so fortunate to have found Yuko for my two children ages 4 and 6. Initially I was concerned about my kids staying focused for the full hour, but Yuko keeps them entirely engage in Japanese language and cultural curriculum with cheer. Even my rambunctious 4 year old son :)
Yuko brings age appropriate materials, charts, flash cards, puppets, worksheets, and origami to tutoring sessions and my kids look forward to every sessions with her. Yuko walks that beautiful balance between total professionalism and skilled playfulness that is so effective with young kids. My children have picked up traditional Japanese songs and play and pieces of conversational Japanese in a very short time.
Thank you very much, Nicol, for your all positive comments! I really enjoy tutoring your children and look forward to having a great time with them every week.
Yuko helped me find areas that I really needed to focus on, and provided resources that I could use in between lessons! My current goal is to take the JLPT N4, and after that I plan on continuing conversation practice, and I think that Yuko will be able to help me a lot with both goals!
Thank you for your wonderful feedback! Please feel free to contact me whenever you are ready for another lesson.
I had an excellent experience with Yuko. She did a great job tailoring lessons to my very specific needs, doing extra work to bring my articles in Japanese related to my interests. I appreciated her attentiveness and willingness to correct my mistakes (something that is useful but I can't get from just chatting with friends). She is very professional, communicative, prompt, and flexible. Overall, a great tutor and highly recommended!
Thank you very much for your wonderful review! I really enjoyed talking with you in Japanese and hope to see you again.
Yuko was very patient and helpful in my lesson, and came prepared with a lot of study materials for us to work with, even though I'm studying an area of the language that isn't commonly studied outside of Japan. Unlike many Japanese teachers, she also wasn't afraid to point out small errors, which often never get fixed simply by being around native speakers or novice teachers, who frequently don't feel confident enough to bring them up. At my stage, it's important not to let bad habits slide, so I was extremely thankful that she was comfortable enough to let me know when I'd used a wrong particle, etc.
I'm very glad to have met her!
Yuko was a great tutor. She was prepared with her own books to supplement the ones I had, and her corrections to my spoken Japanese were clear and necessary. Thank you, Yuko-san!
Thank you for the great review! I will be looking forward to seeing you for the second lesson.
Yuko-san was very helpful in brushing up my Japanese skills. She quickly aligned to my level (business proficient) while still challenging me. In particular, after I asked her to ensure she point out unnatural mistakes even if small, she was able to not only point out the mistakes but help me quickly understand why and then continue on in the conversation. Yuko was also able to quickly adapt to the specific business topics I was interested in, read several articles with me and then helped with discussion.
I would highly recommend Yuko. She listened and adapted to my needs, was flexible on scheduling and always prompt in her responses. It was a great experience!
Thank you very much for posting a wonderful feedback! I enjoyed reading and talking with you so much.
Yuko has been giving Japanese lessons to my 14 year old daughter to prepare her for a study abroad program. My daughter loves Yuko's gentle but effective teaching style. She uses a text book to go over basic grammar, reading and writing, as well as teaching conversational skills. She also gives homework assignments to help in-between session studying. Overall we're very pleased with our experience with Yuko, and my daughter is more confident to go to Japan now. Thank you!
Thank you very much for posting the great review about my lessons. I enjoyed tutoring your daughter a lot. She is a quick learner and I am sure that she will be a good speaker of Japanese when after spending one year in Japan.
Have a good summer and good luck with your daughter's study in Japan!
My daughter has met with Yuko a couple of times and each experience has been more than great! Yuko is patient and we can tell she loves what she does as she takes the time for my daughter to actually learn. She has even tasked homework assignments for my daughter to work on! Enough wonderful statements can not be said regarding Yuko and her style of educating. My daughter and I are extremely blessed to have the opportunity for Yuko to teach her Japanese!
Thank you, Sylvia for the wonderful review about my lessons! I have been enjoying tutoring your daughter a lot, since she is so interested to learn Japanese and I am very happy to be your daughter's help. I will be looking forward to meeting you and your daughter soon!
I am pretty happy about the lessons with Yuko so far. I started Japanese study as a total beginner and she was very patient and helpful. Also she provided a flexible schedule which worked great for me. Majority of the tutors I contacted before simply wanted me to pay them and then organize the lessons on my own and it had to be a library room and if that could not be done they would only consider a Starbucks location (which I personally find ridiculous for a fair tuition rate). Yuko was reasonable to arrange the lessons by booking a room herself and if that could not be done she would just come to my house. So I wish I could afford more time with her as it is important for the language practice.
She is a great tutor I highly recommend.
Thank you, Serge, very much for the great review about me! I am always happy to tutor the students, who are diligent, serious and punctual like you.
Yuko has been a great tutor. When my son needed to skip a year of Japanese in high school (because of the way his schedule came together he could only fit in the advanced class), we decided to get a tutor to assist him through the year. It was a huge success - he had no problem getting through the year and got an A in the class! Yuko was particularly helpful in advancing his verbal/conversational Japanese. Yuko is easy to reach and flexible, which was much appreciated for a high school student with a crazy schedule!
Hi Lynnette, I am happy to hear that your son got an A in Japanese class. Thank you very much for finding time for the excellent feedback. Have a great summer!
Yuko cleared up a lot of pronunciation, spelling, and grammar questions I had during the lesson. She was also able to meet for the tutoring session on pretty short notice. I would definitely recommend this tutor for learning Russian.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching and tutoring my native language Japanese to adults and children around Seattle for more than 7 years. Currently, I teach and tutor Japanese almost everyday - at a preschool, a university, a public school (after school program), coffee shops, libraries and student's houses. I majored in Russian language and linguistics both in undergraduate and graduate and the knowledge of languages and experiences have been helping me to teach Japanese with confidence.
My occupation back in Japan was Russian language teacher at Universities. I started learning Russian at Kyoto Sangyo University when I was 18 years old. After graduation, I entered Kyoto University Graduate School to study Russian language and linguistics more. In 2005, I received a Ph.D degree. Although I am not a native speaker, I speak Russian well, since I studied Russian at a language school and a university in Moscow for about a year and I still use Russian at home every day.
