About Edward

I have been tutoring young adults for the past ten years while teaching ESL overseas. I have found that dealing with individuals working for specific goals is rewarding because the students can feel a sense of accomplishment when they need a little help to find their own abilities. Working with individuals is very rewarding to both the student and the teacher so tutoring is as rewarding as working in a classroom situation. I feel that the students I tutor have a specific goal in min, and I am able to help them meet their aims and goals through guiding them. I am able to teach both basic grammar and practical skills. For example, if students need help in grammar or vocabulary development, I have the necessary knowledge to help him or her meet his or her goals. If a student needs the more practical skills such as reading for information, or writing a paper then I would be able to help him/her in that area because of my experience in teaching academic English.

The emphasis in my tutoring experience of the past ten years has been mainly twofold. The first is teaching skills necessary to meet standards on English proficiency exams--both oral and listening as well as reading and writing. The second is helping college students with developing research skills and helping them with their research projects. Over the years, I have found that it is the students wants and needs which push them to excel, and the goal of the instructor is to guide them with his/her expertise that has been acquired over the years of teaching and being involved in ESL.

In addition, to the experience working as an ESL teacher for forty years, I have a Licentiate Diploma in TESOL, Trinity College London. This has enabled me to understand the processes of learning a second language and improved my skills to teach these practical subjects. I have been using the skills I learned to help all my students. I have also been involved in curriculum development, assessment, and teacher training. These activities have helped me appreciate the needs and wants of all sorts of students.

I look forward to hearing from you concerning your need to study English.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I studied American History as an undergraduate at university and have been an avid reader and researcher in American History. Recently, I have tutored students in IB and AP history helping them prepare for exams and doing research.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL for over thirty years both in the United States and the Middle East. I have taught all four skills and test preparation course for colleges, bridge programs, and military institutions. In addition, I have tutored students from high school students to college graduates. I have also tutored students to take proficiency exams. I have a Trinity Licentiate from London in ESL.

Grammar

I am extremely interested in English Grammar and have developed many different types of grammar exercises and rules that make English grammar relevant--both speaking and writing.

IELTS

I have been an IELTS examiner, both speaking and writing, in Doha, Qatar and Seattle, Washington. I have also taught IELTS preparation classes at the British Council in Doha, Qatar as well as individual tutoring for students preparing for the exam. I have been working with students to teach them the strategies to complete successfully both general and academic tasks.

TOEFL

I have tutored students to improve their TOEFL scores for over thirty years. I have worked with students taking both institutional and computer based exams. I am able to help students in all four skill areas and show them strategies to improve their scores on both individual and integrated tasks.

Today Edward taught me the pronunciation on "V" and "W". He corrected my previous mispronunciation. Now I can grasp both. He assigned the homework and required me to go over the vocabulary and use recorder to record my reading these words. He will check what about my progress.
