Basically, I ask them to write and express their own feelings about subjects they like, mixing school worksheets that were not completed correctly with new ideas to motivate them to learn to think on their own and build their own worldview knowledge. Their perspectives are different from mine most of the time. I also educate them about all the value of building journals with vocabulary/best writings/creative poems, etc. that they might transport to college or future work situations to enhance their cognitive ability and academic or career success.
