Chemistry classes I tutor include high school chemistry, general chemistry, and organic chemistry I. Unfortunately, I do not tutor organic chemistry II, since staying fresh on that material can be time consuming.

For math, I tutor algebra, geometry, precalculus, and calculus 1.

Chemistry classes I tutor include high school chemistry, general chemistry, and organic chemistry I. Unfortunately, I do not tutor organic chemistry II, since staying fresh on that material can be time consuming.

For math, I tutor algebra, geometry, precalculus, and calculus 1.

I'm also able to help students to prepare for the math section of the ACT or SAT!

I began tutoring while attending college at Arcadia University, where I was a chemistry major with minors in math and computer science. At Arcadia I received the ACS Organic Division Undergraduate Award, and assisted in computational chemistry research. I then moved to Houston to work on a master's in chemistry at Rice University, where I focused on break down of the mean field approximation. While at Rice I was a TA for general chemistry labs.

After graduate school I began to tutor full time. Most of the time, I meet with students as a self-employed tutor, but I sometimes tutor through Wyzant or through other tutoring organizations.

I love the one on one nature of tutoring, and how it often invites students to ask important questions they may keep to themselves during class. I aim to build confidence and the ability to learn independently.

To give an idea of what an in-person meeting would look like, I usually bring a large white board with me for use during lessons. I am also able to provide practice work, assist in creating study guides, or discuss learning styles and study strategies. I have accumulated many notes and practice problems over my years of tutoring, but I try to follow very closely the specific material covered in class.

When tutoring online, or in a location where a whiteboard cannot be set up, my laptop and stylus allow me to work on a digital whiteboard that can be saved as a pdf and sent to the student.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. I look forward to hearing from any interested students!

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

As an undergraduate student I completed a mathematics minor. I went on to study computational chemistry in a Master's program at Rice University, after which I began to tutor math and chemistry at the high school and college levels. ACT and SAT test prep are both part of my specialization. I love to watch students improve as we fill in gaps in their math background together!
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

In college I did a minor in mathematics. As a graduate student at Rice, the research I did required a lot of math. I first started tutoring math in 2014.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

During college I was a chemistry major, but also completed a minor in mathematics. In graduate school at Rice University, the research necessary to complete my masters in theoretical chemistry relied heavily on knowledge of math and computer science. I first started tutoring math in 2014.
Ballet

Ballet

I have been a ballet dancer since I was very young. I began traveling to attend summer dance intensives beginning the summer before 6th grade, including out-of-state schools such as the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA). I spent my last three years of high school at a boarding school, South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities (SCGSAH), where I was able to focus on academics before lunch, and dance training after lunch. I first began teaching ballet as a summer job during high school, at Montessori Early Learning Center, in Columbia, SC (my hometown). Since graduating from high school, I remained in shape during college and graduate school by taking classes at Houston Ballet and Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami.
Chemistry

Chemistry

During college I was a chemistry major, and afterwards I went on to complete a masters in theoretical chemistry at Rice University. While a grad student at Rice, I served as TA for general chemistry labs. I have been tutoring chemistry since 2014.
Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

In college I was a chemistry major. I took organic chemistry in my sophomore year, and received the ACS Organic Division Undergraduate Award at Arcadia University in 2016. It is a challenging subject that I have enjoyed tutoring since then.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have many years of experience tutoring all math classes through calculus one. I began tutoring during college, and switched to tutoring full time after leaving graduate school. My educational background includes a BS in chemistry from Arcadia University, with minors in math and computer science, and a masters in computational chemistry from Rice University.
Precalculus

Precalculus

In college I completed a minor in mathematics, and the chemical research I did for my masters at Rice University relied heavily on math and computer science. I have been tutoring math since 2014.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have many years of experience working with students of both high school and college levels on all math classes through calculus one. I have used this experience to work with students on preparing for the math sections of the SAT and ACT. My educational background includes a BS in chemistry from Arcadia University and a masters in computational chemistry from Rice University.

great teacher for chemistry

Lena did an excellent job explaining Pre AP chemistry and she did very well on her exams. She showed her how to practice various questions and prepare for the exam

Organic Chemistry

"She was really helpful and understanding. The lesson we went over helped me get excited about learning organic chemistry again. I lost that excitement two semesters ago but now chemistry seems fun again and it's all thanks to her." -Princess Flanders

A lifesaver!!

She helped set up a last minute session before a major test for my 7th grader(our usual tutor cancelled last minute). Extremely patient and helpful! So thankful for her time and help! Highly recommend!!
